TULSA, Okla. - Iowa State (11-8) fell behind to both North Dakota and Drake on Saturday at the Holiday Inn Tulsa-City Center Festival but rallied in the seventh inning of each game to win by the scores of 7-6 and 3-2 over the Sioux (3-9) and Bulldogs (7-7), respectively. Senior Rachel Zabriskie won both games for the Cyclones and became the first Cyclone to ever record 700 strikeouts.
Freshman Anna Cole was the star against North Dakota, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, including a walk-off sac fly to plate second baseman Amandine Habben to win the game. Habben tied the game on an RBI triple earlier in the frame. Cole finished the day with two hits in five at-bats and a walk.
Zabriskie (6-4) compiled a 1.91 ERA over 11 innings of work over the two games. Zabriskie allowed only three earned runs on the day and fanned 12. She now sits on 705 K's.
Shortstop Sara Davison was solid throughout the day, hitting .571 (4-for-7) and pushing the tying run across for Iowa State in the top of the seventh against Drake. Heidi Kidwell, who advanced to second on Davison's single and scored on the throw by Drake.
Dalyn Varela and Erica Miller also played essential roles in the Cyclones' wins. Varela had four hits, a walk and scored a run and Miller added three hits, a walk and two runs scored.
Drake's Jenna DeLong (5-3) surrendered five hits and two earned runs in absorbing the 3-2 loss.
Tori Torrescano started the scoring for Iowa State against North Dakota (3-9) with an RBI single to score Sara Davison in the first inning. Varela and Torrescano would come around to score also in the first, Varela on a single by Habben and Torrescano on an error by North Dakota's Lindy Sippola.
Davison, who went 2-for-3 with a walk against the Sioux, scored the Cyclones' fourth run on a double by Torrescano in the second.
An illegal pitch by Zabriskie put North Dakota on the board, down 4-1 in the third before Iowa State grew the lead back to four when Cole, getting her second career start in as many games, hit a double to score Kelsey Enslin who entered to run for Miller.
North Dakota refused to fade, tagging Zabriskie for three more runs, two earned, in the sixth. Bree Holliday relieved Zabriskie with one out in the inning before North Dakota tied the game at five on an error by catcher Evan Folks.
The Sioux took its first lead of the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Courtney Gonzales before Habben and Cole came through for the Cyclones in the bottom of the frame against Caralyn Chewning (0-4) .
Next weekend, Iowa State travels to Wichita State for games on Saturday and Sunday before dropping in on the University of Missouri, Kansas City on Monday on the way back to Ames. Saturday's game with Wichita State begins at noon CST.
