WICHITA, Kan. - The Cyclone softball team scored its first two road wins and improved to 13-8 on the year on Saturday with two wins over Wichita State (6-17). Iowa State run-ruled the Shockers, 10-2 in the series opener and took game two, 10-5. Senior Rachel Zabriskie broke the all-time Iowa State saves record of seven, pitching two innings of one-hit ball in final game of the day.
Zabriskie (7-4) allowed three hits and no runs in game one and Bree Holliday (2-1) relieved Lauren Kennewell in the second game to earn the win, giving up three hits and three runs in her 1 1/3 innings pitched.
Game two proved to be a game of big hits for the Cyclones as first baseman Erica Miller slammed her second home run of the season and center fielder Heidi Kidwell busted out her second triple of the season. Kidwell drove home five of the Cyclones' runs in game two.
Freshman Kelsey Enslin had a breakout day against Wichita State. Enslin, who had pinch run 14 times this season, got her first two career starts in left field and her first two career hits in game two.
Shockers game one starter Katie Armagost (4-6) managed only one out and gave up three runs before being relieved by Brianna Smet. Armagost threw five illegal pitches, two of which plated runs for the Cyclones. The third run for Iowa State was courtesy of an error by Wichita State center fielder Kiersten Dixon.
Smet walked the first three Cyclones to lead off the third and designated player Tori Torrescano singled home Kidwell to add to the Iowa State lead. Torrescano is 2-for-3 this season with the bases loaded.
Following Torrescano, Amandine Habben was hit by a pitch to score Sara Davison and Smet walked Anna Cole to bring home Dalyn Varela. After Torrescano came around to score on a groundout by Sara Rice, the Cyclones had built the lead to 7-0 through three.
The fourth inning brought three more runs for the Cyclones as Kidwell scored on a wild pitch by Smet and Varela (sac fly) and Cole (single) plated the final two runs of the game for Iowa State.
After putting only two runners in scoring position against Zabriskie, both in the fourth frame, the Shockers got on the board against reliever Lauren Kennewell in the fifth. With the bases loaded, aided by an error by Varela, and two out, first baseman Jamie Hull smashed a single to send teammates Rachel Milnark and Dixon home.
Zabriskie re-entered the game to get the final out and secure the win.
The Cyclones got on the board first in game two, taking a 4-0 lead off Armagost in the fourth on Miller's blast, Kidwell's triple (2 RBI) and an illegal pitch by Anderson.
Kennewell gave up only one run in her start on an illegal pitch in the fourth inning. Holliday, taking over with two outs in the fourth, allowed the Shockers to tie the game at four in the fifth with RBIs by Dixon, Heather Gerritse and Hayley Temple.
The Cyclones got back on top by a run playing small ball in the top of the sixth. Enslin led off the inning with her second career hit and moved to second on a bunt single by Kidwell. Davison advanced both runners on a ground out and Varela pushed Kidwell home with a sacrifice fly.
Five more Cyclone runs scored in the seventh. Kidwell cleared the bases on a bases loaded double against Smet (2-8) and a Varela double sent Davison and Kidwell home for the 10-4 lead.
Zabriskie picked up her second save of the season after entering in the bottom of the sixth for Holliday with a 5-4 lead. She gave up a home run to Temple in the bottom of the seventh before closing out the victory.
On Sunday, the Cyclones and Shockers face off at noon CST in the series finale.
