WICHITA, Kan. - Cyclone senior Rachel Zabriskie won her 61st career game Sunday as Iowa State (14-8) defeated the Wichita State Shockers (6-18), 7-2, to complete the three-game sweep. Zabriskie was aided by freshman Kelsey Enslin's first career RBIs and a solo home run by designated player Tori Torrescano.
Torrescano set up a five-run sixth inning by smacking her third dinger of the year, a lead-off shot to center field. Enslin, 2-for-2 in the game, singled with one out to score Erica Miller and pinch runner Annie Gray. The Cyclones had four hits and scored two runs on an error in the frame.
In her sixth complete game of the season and 76th of her career, Zabriskie (8-4) was nails through five innings, striking out five and allowing no runs on two hits. In the sixth, Wichita State took advantage of a one-out single by Haley Temple and an error by Iowa State third baseman Dalyn Varela to plate two unearned runs.
The Cyclones reached starter Katie Armagost (4-7) for three runs over five innings and tapped reliever Sloan Anderson for four runs, two earned, on four hits.
Katie Harms got the Cyclones on the board in the second with a pinch-hit fielder's choice that brought catcher Amandine Habben home. Although Iowa State had loaded the bases with one out in the frame, Habben was the only runner to score.
Freshman Anna Cole knocked in her third RBI of the series with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give Iowa State the 2-0 lead, sending home Erin Johnson who entered to run for Erica Miller after Miller walked to lead off the inning. Miller reached base four times on Sunday, getting two hits and two walks.
The Shockers threatened to strike in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs before Zabriskie coaxed a fly out from first baseman Jamie Hull to end the inning. Hull, who entered the weekend hitting .355, best on the team, managed only two hits in nine at bats against Cyclones pitchers over the weekend.
Next weekend the Cyclones are in California to play in the Louisville Slugger Classic hosted by No. 12 Stanford. On Friday, the Cyclones face Nevada-Las Vegas at 3:30 p.m. CST followed by the Cardinals at 8:30 p.m. Saturday brings Cal Poly at 3:30 p.m. and the Cardinals again at 8:30 p.m. The weekend finale is Sunday at 11 a.m. CST against Northwestern.
