Anderson's 33 Not Enough in Iowa State's Loss to Colorado

KANSAS CITY, Mo - A career-high 33 points by senior Jake Anderson and 19 points and six assists by senior Diante Garrett could not get the 12th-seeded Iowa State men's basketball team past fifth-seeded Colorado Wednesday in the Sprint Center during the first round of the Big 12 Championship. A 13-5 run in the final 3:02 by Colorado would eventually be too much for the Cyclones to overcome, as Iowa State fell 77-75.
Anderson's 33 points were the most by a Cyclone this season and gave Iowa State an opportunity the be the third 12th-seeded team in Big 12 Championship history to win its opening-round tilt. Anderson recorded the second-best scoring effort by a Cyclone in Big 12 Championship action, trailing only Marcus Fizer who tallied 38.
In addition to Garrett and Anderson, Iowa State (16-16) received a strong all-around effort from Calvin Godfrey. The freshman grabbed a career-best six offensive rebounds (eight overall), while adding career high in blocks (four) and tying a career mark with three steals.
After holding Colorado's Alec Burks to four first-half points, the Grandview, Mo., native erupted for 25 tallies in the second half. Burks hit a key, highly contested shot with 1:13 remaining that gave Colorado a 72-74 lead it would not relinquish.
Iowa State led at the intermission 28-26, led by Anderson's 11 points. The Cyclones forced nine first-half Colorado turnovers and held the Buffaloes to one 3-pointer in the opening stanza. Colorado would go on to record 15 turnovers in the game.
The Cyclones got off to a slow start, falling behind 6-0. After eating away the Colorado lead, Iowa State took its first lead after a 3-pointer by Jamie Vanderbeken put the Cyclones up 14-13 with 13:43 remaining in the first half.
