AMES, Iowa - Cyclones Erica Miller and Dalyn Varela both hit multi-run home runs on Sunday but it wasn't enough against the No. 24 Red Raiders of Texas Tech (38-6, 3-5 Big 12) who posted 15 hits en route to a 16-5 win over Iowa State (17-17, 1-5 Big 12).
Miller's dinger, a two-run shot over the centerfield wall, came in the bottom of the first to tie the score at two after TTU plated one run on an Erin Johnson error and another on a single by Logan Hall in the top of the frame. Miller's homer was her ninth of the season.
Varela also plated two with her sixth home run of the season as Sara Davison scored from second. The four-bagger came in the bottom of the fifth to draw the Cyclones within five, trailing 9-4, after a busy second inning for Texas Tech that included Sandy James' second home run of the weekend, this time a two-out grand slam off Rachel Zabriskie (11-11) before a fourth inning home run by Cydney Allen that scored three.
James was the trailblazer for the Red Raiders throughout the game, going 4-for-4 with eight RBIs, one walk and two runs scored. Hall added three RBIs of her own on the day to match with Allen's three.
In the sixth inning, Katie Harms connected on the first pinch-hit hit of the season for Iowa State hitting in place of Kelsey Enslin and scoring Anna Cole from third. The RBI is the third for Harms on the year.
The Red Raiders tacked on another four runs in the top of the seventh against reliever Bree Holliday to ensure the win for Brittany Talley (12-3) who pitched 6.1 innings allowing six hits and three runs while walking only one and striking out three.
Zabriskie threw 3.1 innings Sunday, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs and fanning four before Lauren Kennewell entered to pitch 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and three runs while walking none before Holliday entered to pitch the seventh.
The Cyclones' home stretch ends Tuesday as the team travels to Drake for a 4 p.m. CDT first pitch.
