AUSTIN, Texas - The Iowa State softball team fell, 6-1, to the third-ranked Longhorns on Sunday, moving to 19-19 on the year and 1-7 in Big 12 play. The win improves Texas to 37-4 and a perfect 9-0 in league play.
The Cyclones compiled three hits against Rachel Fox (16-1) including a two-out RBI double by second baseman Erin Johnson in the fifth inning to score Anna Cole who had reached base on a Longhorn error. The RBI is Johnson's third of the season.
Heidi Kidwell, batting after Johnson in the fifth, singled but Johnson was thrown out at home plate as she attempted to score.
Iowa State had runners in scoring position in the third, sixth and seventh innings but a double play ball by Kidwell, a pop up by Cole and a strikeout by Kidwell ended each threat, respectively.
Texas wasted no time jumping to a 4-0 lead, plating two runs in each of the first two innings and adding one each in the fifth and sixth. Shortstop Taylor Thom was the busiest Longhorn on the day, scoring three runs, including one off a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
Nadia Taylor, Torie Schmidt, Brejae Washington, Lexy Bennett and Kim Bruins each had one RBI apiece for Texas.
Rachel Zabriskie picked up the loss for the Cyclones, moving to 12-13 on the season. Zabriskie pitched five innings, giving up eight hits, five earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Relievers Breeanna Holliday and Lauren Kennewell worked the sixth inning in which Holliday gave up the final Longhorn run.
Fox pitched seven innings for Texas, giving up three hits, no earned runs, walking two and striking out five.
On Wednesday, the Cyclones travel to in-state rival Iowa for a 5 p.m. CDT game in Iowa City.
