IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team fell to 19-20 overall on Wednesday, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Iowa Hawkeyes (25-16).
Twice during the game, the Cyclones loaded the bases without scoring. The second time came in the top of the fifth when two errors and two walks plated the Cyclones' first runs with no outs. However, Iowa was able to work out of the jam with no more Cyclones crossing home plate.
Rachel Zabriskie (12-14) took the tough loss for Iowa State, pitching six innings and allowing six hits by six different Hawkeyes, allowing four earned runs, walking three and striking out seven. In her career, Zabriskie boasts 790 strikeouts.
The Hawkeyes took a quick three-run lead in the bottom of the second on a Jenny Schuelke home run, the 24th dinger given up by Zabriskie this season.
Entering the fifth with only one hit on the day, Iowa State got two runs back as Amandine Habben hit a lead-off single before Iowa's second baseman Katie Keim committed two-straight errors, loading the bases for Sara Rice who walked to score Kelsey Enslin, pinch running for Habben.
Hawkeye starter Chelsea Lyon followed Rice's RBI walk with a walk to Cyclone third baseman Dalyn Varela, to draw the Cyclones within one. Reliever Kayla Massey (12-6) entered after Varela's walk to get three outs from Erica Miller, Tori Torrescano and Anna Cole to end the top half of the inning.
Lyon threw four innings of two-hit ball, allowing two runs, neither earned, while walking four with no strikeouts. Massey pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits, one earned run and fanning four with no walks.
In the sixth, the Cyclones tied the score at three on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt by Habben to score freshman Erin Johnson, who led off the frame with her first career triple.
Iowa's Michelle Zoeller put the Hawkeye's on top again for good in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to left fielder Torrescano to score Liz Watkins who had a double and stolen base in the inning.
On Friday and Saturday, the Cyclones host Big 12 foe Kansas. Friday's contest gets started at 4 p.m. with Saturday's game scheduled for noon. Both times CDT.
