AMES, Iowa - Amandine Habben's RBI in the bottom of the fifth was the difference between Iowa State and Kansas as the Cyclones picked up a 4-3 win Friday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The win improves Iowa State to 20-20 overall on the year and 2-7 in conference play. Kansas drops to 28-20 overall and 1-14 in Big 12 competition.
After Kansas tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth, he Cyclones went right back to work in the bottom frame. Singles by Erica Miller and Tori Torrescano and Erin Johnson reaching on a fielder's choice loaded the bases for the Cyclones with no outs. After Anna Cole struck out, Amandine Habben hit a grounder right to the first baseman Laura Vickers, who touched the bag before throwing to home, where Miller's pinch runner Jennifer Drahozal got under the tag to restore Iowa State's lead at 4-3.
Miller stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the third and took an Allie Clark pitch over the centerfield wall for her 10th home run of the season. Miller became the fifth Cyclone in school history to reach the double-figure mark for home runs in a season. Miller is one four-bagger away from tying the school standard for homers in a season, which currently stands at 11, hit by Lindsey Herrin in 2002.
Heidi Kidwell made her own mark in the history book, going 2-for-4 on the day to enter Iowa State's top 10 for career hits with her 139 career base knocks. Kidwell also had highlights in the field with a spectacular diving catch in centerfield to end the top of the second inning.
Iowa State began to put its offense together in the bottom of the third with singles by Kidwell and Sara Davison to lead off the inning. After Dalyn Varela flew out to right, the throw by KU's Liz Kocon went past the third baseman and out of the field of play, sending Kidwell home and Davison to third. During Miller's at bat, Davison got caught in a rundown between third and home but registered a steal of home when the throw to Jayhawk catcher Brittany Hile was dropped to give Iowa State a 2-1 lead. The next pitch, Miller hit her home run to make the Iowa State advantage 3-1.
Kansas evened it up in the top of the fifth. After Rachel Zabriskie started the inning with a strikeout of Brittany Hile, Kocon got on base with a single. After striking out Mariah Montogmery looking, Marissa Ingle cleared the bases with a homer off of the scoreboard in right-centerfield to make it a 3-3 game.
Zabriskie picked up the win for Iowa State to improve to 13-14 on the year. The senior pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out eight. The Kansas loss was charged to Kristin Martinez, dropping her to 12-10 in 2011. Martinez came in relief of Clark to pitch three and two-thirds, allowing five hits and one run while striking out three.
The Cyclones and Jayhawks will play again Saturday at noon CDT.
