AMES, Iowa - Cyclone senior Rachel Zabriskie struck out nine batters Thursday to join the top 10 strikeout leaders in Big 12 history with 764 career strikeouts. However, the Iowa State softball team struggled to put runs on the board at the Southwest Athletic Complex as the Cyclones (17-15, 1-3 Big 12) were swept by the Minnesota Golden Gophers (21-16, 1-3 Big Ten) 1-0 in 10 innings and 11-3 in five.
Iowa State saw its best opportunity of game one in the bottom of the seventh. Dalyn Varela led off the inning by surviving an appeal for a third strike at first base to earn a single. After a Tori Torrescano single moved pinch runner Erin Johnson to second, the Cyclones loaded the bases with a single from Anna Cole. However, the Cyclones could not bring home anyone as Amandine Habben and Katie Harms both struck out, allowing the Gophers to escape the inning.
After nine innings of scoreless softball, the international rule was adopted, and Minnesota took advantage of the opportunity to put the first run on the board with an RBI-double by Kari Dorle for the 1-0 lead.
Iowa State started the bottom of the 10th with Jennifer Drahozal pinch running at second for Habben. Iowa State could not put a run on the board as Sara Rice and Breeanna Holliday struck out and Heidi Kidwell grounded out to end the game.
Zabriskie (11-9) drew the loss for the Cyclones. Zabriskie pitched all 10 innings, allowing nine hits and one run. Sara Moulton (19-10) picked up the Golden Gophers win, throwing 10 innings and allowing seven hits and striking out 15.
Minnesota did not waste time getting on the board in game two, posting its first run of the game in the second on an RBI-double by Jessie Hathaway. Alex Davis added two more with an RBI-double in the top of the third and Sara DuPaul cleared the bases the next at bat with a big home run to leftfield to make the score 5-0.
Iowa State reduced the deficit in the fifth as Erin Johnson and Kidwell went around the bags when Varela sent a towering home run out to left to make it 5-3, Minnesota.
Minnesota put the game out of the reach with a five-run fourth inning to increase its lead to 10-3. The Gophers posted another run in the top of the fifth to give themselves the 11-3 margin.
Alissa Koch earned the win for the Gophers to improve to 2-6 on the season. Koch allowed three runs on five hits while striking out eight. Lauren Kennewell took the loss for Iowa State to fall to 1-2 on the season. Kennewell went two-and-one-third innings allowing four hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out four.
The Cyclones return to conference play this weekend with a pair of games against No. 24 Texas Tech. Game one takes place on Saturday at 2 p.m. CDT. Sunday's game begins at 11 a.m. CDT.
