LINCOLN, Neb. - Cyclone left fielder Tori Torrescano hit her 11th home run of the season and Dalyn Varela smashed her seventh on the year but it wasn't enough as four home runs by the No. 16 Huskers (36-12, 6-9 Big 12) lifted Nebraska over Iowa State (21-25, 3-12 Big 12), 8-7 on Tuesday. Torrescano's home run ties her with teammate Erica Miller and Lindsey Herrin (2002-03) as the single-season home run leaders in Iowa State history.
Varela's shot in the fourth inning gave Iowa State its seventh multi-home run game of the season, the first since Varela hit her last home run, against Texas Tech on April 10.
Iowa State starter Rachel Zabriskie (14-17) went the distance for her 17th complete game of the season, giving up eight runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out four, bringing her career strikeout total to 811.
Nebraska catcher Taylor Edwards struck first for the Huskers, hitting a two-run shot over the center-field wall on a 0-1 pitch from Zabriskie to give the home team the 2-0 lead. Tatum Edwards, Taylor's twin, hit the first of two homers on the night, a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the second, after Torrescano's second inning blast, to grow the lead to 3-1.
The Huskers plated two more runs in the third on a fielder's choice by Nikki Haget and a sac fly by Julie Brechtel, giving NU a 5-1 lead.
After singles by Varela and Erica Miller, right fielder Anna Cole singled to right center on a 2-2 count, sending Varela and pinch runner Kelsey Enslin home and bringing the Cyclones within two, trailing 5-3.
Nebraska right fielder Brooke Thomason was the third Husker to homer off Zabriskie, smashing a 2-1 offering to right field for a 6-3 NU lead.
Varela's three-run home run gave Iowa State new life in the top of the fourth against reliever Tatum Edwards, tying the score at six runs apiece.
Back at the plate in the fifth, Torrescano got her second lead-off hit of the day, a double to right-center. Edwards struck out Cole before Nebraska sent starter Ashley Hagemann (25-11) back into the circle. A pass ball by Taylor Edwards advanced Torrescano to third before second baseman Erin Johnson gave the Cyclones their first lead of the night with a double down the left field line for the 7-6 edge.
Tatum Edwards' second four-bagger of game in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference and securing the 8-7 win.
Iowa State and Nebraska meet again on Thursday in Ames. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. CDT.
