LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 10 Kansas used a 17-2 run in the second half to erase a 12-point deficit en route to an 82-73 victory over Iowa State Saturday afternoon in Allen Fieldhouse.
The Cyclones were up 52-40 with 16:58 left in the game, but the Jayhawks jumped ahead 70-61 with just over eight minutes remaining thanks to their decisive run. Tyshawn Taylor, who scored a game-high 28 points, bombed a pair of 3-pointers in the run, as KU improved to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the Big 12.
The loss drops the Cyclones to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 play.
"I thought we were focused from the beginning and we didn't lose because of our effort," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "But, we had a lapse in the middle part of the second half and we did not recover from it."
Iowa State was ready from the tip, opening up a 17-7 lead while making its first four 3-point attempts. An 11-2 KU run cut the lead to 19-18, but Royce White converted a conventional 3-point play followed by a Chris Allen bomb to move ISU back up, 27-18 with 9:02 left in the first half.
The Cyclones were up by 11 points at 39-28 with 4:43 left in the first period after Allen hit a pair of free-throws. However, ISU's three post players, White, Melvin Ejim and Anthony Booker, all picked up two fouls and were forced to sit the rest of the rest of the way.
KU took advantage, as Thomas Robinson muscled his way for six points in the final four minutes to cut the Cyclone lead to 43-40 at the break. ISU made 7-of-13 shots from downtown in the first 20 minutes.
Iowa State scored the first seven points and went on an 11-2 run to begin the second half while mounting its largest lead of the game at 52-40. The KU run soon followed, as the Jayhawks led 70-61 with 8:29 left in the contest.
Iowa State did manage to cut the gap to two points at 70-68 after Ejim poured in four points in a 7-0 Cyclone run. But KU bounced back with an 8-1 run of its own.
White had another monster game, recording his fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 17 rebounds. White helped the Cyclones outboard KU, 49-41. Allen chipped in with 17 points.
The Cyclones return home to face Oklahoma State Wednesday night. Tip is set for 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
