AMES, Iowa - Royce White scored eight points points in the final five minutes to lead Iowa State to a 72-64 upset over No. 5 Kansas Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. White ended the game with 18 points, as the Cyclones (15-6 overall, 5-3 Big 12) ended a 13-game losing streak to the Jayhawks (17-4 overall, 7-1 Big 12) and a 12-game home losing streak to ranked teams.
Iowa State defeated a top-five team at home for the first time since Jan. 14, 1995 thanks to a solid effort down the stretch. The Cyclones scored on their final seven possessions to come up with its first win over a ranked opponent at home since 2006.
Iowa State, which outrebounded KU, 36-23, was aided by 15 points from Melvin Ejim. Scott Christopherson added 14 points behind 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line.
Iowa State went into the break with a 37-34 lead, the seventh time the Cyclones were leading at the break in Big 12 games. Iowa State led by as many as eight points at 29-21 with 5:37 left before the half.
However, KU went on a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 31-29 at the 3:28 mark of the opening period. Tyshawn Taylor scored a couple of hoops in the run. Iowa State bounced right back to take a three-point lead thanks to a Tyrus McGee 3-pointer.
ISU shot 47.8 percent in the opening period, but committed 13 turnovers.
The Jayhawks can strike quick, and they did in the opening moments of the second half. KU made its first six shots of the second period to forge ahead 47-41 with 16:07 left in the game. But the Cyclones then answered with a 10-2 run to go up 51-49 at the 11:58 mark thanks to an Anthony Booker 3-pointer, his second of the game.
The defense stiffened, as both teams struggled to score for the middle part of the second half. ISU still had a lead until Elijah Johnson scored for KU to put the Jayhawks up 53-52 with 8:15 left in the game.
Iowa State went six minutes without a field goal until McGee scored on a drive where he was fouled, making the free-throw to cap off a conventional 3-play to put ISU up 56-53 with 6:07 left in the game.
White padded the Cyclone lead to 58-53 with a lay-up from a nice Christopherson pass at 4:32 left in the game.
Both teams traded baskets for the next two minutes, as Iowa State still clung to a 62-59 lead with 2:16 left in the game.
White made two free-throws, and then after a defensive stop, Chris Babb buried a long trey to put the Cyclones up 67-59 with 0:55 seconds left. Iowa State made its free-throws down the stretch to secure the win.
