COLLEGE STAITON, Texas –
Royce White recorded the fourth triple-double in Iowa State history to lead the Cyclones to a 74-50 win over Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at Reed Arena. The win improves Iowa State to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12. The Aggies drop to 9-5 and 0-2 in conference play.
The win snaps Iowa State's 10-game road losing streak and was the first conference road win for head coach
Fred Hoiberg. The Cyclones snapped an eight-game losing streak against Texas A&M and recorded their first win in College Station since 2001. The win also snapped a 13-game road-losing streak against the conference's Texas-based schools.
Iowa State also posted a 2-0 start in Big 12 play for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The 24-point margin of victory tied for the greatest-difference in a Big 12 road game with Iowa State's 82-58 win at Missouri in the 2005-06 season.
White finished the game with 10 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. White's triple-double was the first by a Cyclone since Curtis Stinson recorded one against Colorado in 2006. Stinson's triple-double was also the most recent one by a Big 12 player in conference play prior to Saturday's performance. White also joined Marc Urquhurt (Illinois-Chicago, 1989) and Jamaal Tinsley (Missouri, 2000) as Cyclones to record triple-doubles. There have been six triple-doubles in Big 12 conference games, Iowa State has three of them.
Melvin Ejim led five Cyclones in double-figures, posting 15 points off the bench.
Scott Christopherson added 13 points, Chis Babb 11 points and
Chris Allen joined White with 10 points.
The game got off to a sluggish start with both teams only recording two points in the first four minutes of the game. The Cyclones got going with a 9-0 run capped by a Babb 3-pointer to give Iowa State an early 9-2 lead.
Iowa State ran away with the first half, going into the locker room with a 42-23 lead. Though only posting two points, White dominated the Aggies with 11 rebounds and six assists in the first 20 minutes. Christopherson led the Cyclones with 10 points while Allen and Babb each contributed eight. With his second three of the first half, Allen crossed the 1,000-point mark for his college career. The Cyclones shot 16-of-31 from the field in the first stanza, six of those baskets from three-point range.
Texas A&M was led by Ray Turner, who posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Aggies. Joining Turner with double-figure scoring efforts were Elston Turner with 11 points and Dash Harris with 10 points.
Iowa State returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 11 for a home game against Missouri. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m. CST and will be televised by the Big 12 Network.
