OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Iowa State gymnastics team notched a season-high 195.175 at the Perfect 10 Challenge hosted by Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci en route to a second-place finish at the three-squad competition. Iowa State senior Celine Paulus notched 39.375 in the all-around, the highest Cyclone all-around score since Janet Anson posted a 39.425 at the NCAA Central Regional on April 14, 2007. The Cyclones went on to place second at the meet behind No. 5 Oklahoma's 197.200 and ahead of Southeast Missouri State's 189.600.
Paulus' career night was highlighted by a career-high 9.900 on floor, the highest score on the event by a Cyclone this season. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native also tied her career high on bars with a 9.850 effort. Paulus rounded out her impressive evening with a season-high-tying 9.850 on beam and 9.825 on vault. Paulus was coming off a 9.950 vault score at Iowa State's meet at Denver last Saturday.
"Celine's performance tonight was astounding," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. "Her progress continues to amaze me. Each meet she is a little bit better, and I am excited to see how much better she can get."
Oklahoma's Taylor Spears went on to edge Paulus for the all-around title with a 39.400 tally. The Sooners' Brie Olson and Hayden Ward tied for top honors on bars, scoring 9.850. Iowa State (3-4 overall, 0-2 Big 12 Conference) started its evening off with a season-high 48.575 on bars. Paulus led the way for the Cyclones, while fellow senior Michelle Browning had a 9.750.
"The night shook out the same way we anticipated it would," Ronayne said. "One of our goals was to hit five out of six routines on every event and increase our percentage of stuck dismounts. I feel that we hit the mark on both. We look forward to continued improvement throughout the season."
The Cyclones moved to beam for the second rotation and tallied a solid 48.850 on the apparatus. Paulus tallied the top score for the Cyclones and Michelle Shealy (9.800) and Hailey Johnson (9.775) delivered strong efforts for Iowa State.
Floor was Iowa State's third event, and the Cyclones delivered their highest score on any apparatus this season with a 49.100. Paulus' 9.900 was the highest tally by a Cyclone since Elizabeth Stranahan's 9.900 on March 13, 2011. Stranahan produced a season-high 9.825, while Caitlin Brown posted a career-best 9.825 Friday night.
The Cyclones closed the evening on vault and Paulus and Browning were the top scorers for Iowa State on the apparatus with 9.800s. The Cyclones posted a 48.650 on the event, and Brown chipped in with a solid 9.725 on the apparatus.
