CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Iowa State Cyclones (3-9, 0-0 Big 12) ended their seven game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Colorado State (4-8, 0-0 Mountain West) on Friday at the Cathedral City Classic before Pacific (4-6, 0-0 Big West) picked up a 8-0 shutout over the Cyclones in the evening tilt.
After going hitless in two games on Thursday, Iowa State's Erica Miller blistered the ball throughout the day on Friday, nabbing four hits in five at-bats including a double in the Cyclones' win over Colorado State. On the season, Miller is hitting .258 with three extra-base hits.
Against the Rams, Iowa State started strong, scoring its first run in the top of the first on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Dalyn Varela that scored Lexi Slater, who doubled to lead off the game.
Colorado State evened the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the inning but the Cyclones tacked on three more runs, two driven in by freshman Jorden Smith, to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Iowa State's final run came on a passed ball by Rams catcher Emily Pohl in the top of the final inning.
Tori Torrescano (3-4) picked up her third win of the season, pitching 6.1 innings, not allowing a run until the Rams made a late push in the seventh, grabbing two runs and cutting the Cyclone lead to 4-3 before Iowa State secured the final out and the victory. In her ninth appearance of the season, Torrescano allowed six hits, two runs, walked two batters and struck out three.
Colorado's Molly Randle (0-3) absorbed the loss for the Rams, throwing four innings and giving up three hits, two runs, two walks and fanning four.
Pacific's Dani Bonnet (1-1) froze the Cyclone offense in the evening game, allowing just three hits, two off the bat of Iowa State junior Erica Miller, and no runs in the Tigers' five-inning win over the Cyclones. Bonnet walked two and struck out two in her five innings in the circle.
Nikki Armagost did most of the damage for Pacific, driving in four runs on two hits. Cyclone senior Lauren Kennewell (0-2) gave up five runs, three earned, in her 1.1 innings of work, walking and striking out two.
Saturday is the final day of competition at the Cathedral City Classic for Iowa State. The Cyclones are scheduled to play San Diego State at noon CST.
