LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Iowa State (7-14, 0-0 Big 12) suffered two shutouts Wednesday at Loyola Marymount (20-10, 0-0 PCSC) by the scores of 6-0 and 17-0.
On the day, Iowa State collected only four hits, two in each game, and hit .103 against Loyola State's Molly Medeiros (13-4) and Dana Waldusky (6-3). The Lions hit .462 and touched 44 bases with six home runs during the midweek doubleheader.
Erica Miller and Amber Ewert entered Wednesday's contests with hitting streaks of nine and four games, respectively, before both streaks ended in game one against the Lions. Miller found her swing again in game two, collecting Iowa State's first hit.
Right fielder Madison Jones tallied Iowa State's first hit in game one, a leadoff single in the sixth inning, off Loyola Marymount starter Medeiros. Medeiros allowed two hits, no runs, no walks and struck out four in her 15th complete game of the season.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Medeiros hit Miller to put just the second Iowa State runner of the day on first and was replaced on the basepaths by pinch runner Erin Johnson. A Torrescano single to center put runners at first and second with one out but neither would go any farther as Medeiros coaxed a lineout from Dalyn Varela and got Amandine Habben to pop out to third for the final out.
Torrescano (5-8) gave up just one hit in the Lions' first two innings but the home team hit two doubles and two home runs, off the bats of Samantha Nelson and Kelly Sarginson, in the bottom of the third to put Loyola Marymount up, 4-0. Torrescano was relieved after Sarginson's homer after throwing 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs, walking none and striking out one.
Loyola Marymount added one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to take the game to its final score of 6-0.
The Lions jumped out a 6-0 lead in the first inning of game two on RBI singles from Sarginson, Brittany Pereda and Skylar Segura before Olivia Alvarez capped the scoring with a three-run home run off reliever Madison Jones. Iowa State starter Breeanna Holliday (1-1) faced five batters, retiring one, and was charged with four runs in her third start of the season. Holliday walked one and struck out none.
Sarginson hit her second home run of the day in the Loyola Marymount second, adding three runs to the Lions' lead and Meghan Harman smashed the second home run of the frame, a two-run shot, to put Loyola Marymount up, 11-0.
It was more of the same in the bottom of the third when Pereda added four runs to the home team's lead with a grand slam off Miranda Kemp. A two-RBI single from Alvarez off Taylor Smith put the final two runs on the board as the Lions went up 17-0.
Waldusky threw a complete game against Iowa State, allowing two hits, walking one and fanning five.
