MORAGA, Calif. - Playing a modified schedule after the first day of the 2012 Gaels Classic was rained out, Iowa State (8-15, 0-0 Big 12) fell to host St. Mary's (6-11, 0-0 PCSC), 9-4, before downing Santa Clara (4-21, 0-0 PCSC) 6-2 on Saturday.
Sara Rice went a combined 4-for-5 against the Gaels and Broncos with a double and two RBIs, one in each contest. Sara Davison also collected four hits for Iowa State on the day and added two RBIs.
St. Mary's hit four two-run home runs in defeating Iowa State in the first game of the day. Michelle Mounts hit two of the four-baggers, one in the first and one in the fifth, both off Iowa State starter Tori Torrescano (5-9) who was removed after Mounts' second home run. Torrescano threw four innings and face two batters in the bottom of the fifth, surrendering six runs on four hits, walking two and fanning four.
Iowa State drove in three runs in the third frame off RBI singles from Erica Miller and Sara Rice and a sacrifice fly by Torrescano. The Cyclones added one more run in the seventh when Lexi Slater grounded out to short, bringing Jorden Smith home from third.
In the circle for St. Mary's, reliever Jessica Lemmon (3-6) picked up the win with four innings of three-hit softball, allowing just one run, walking one and striking out three Cyclone batters.
The Cyclones struck first against the Broncos as a single by Lexi Slater drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the opening frame.
Santa Clara put up two runs in the fourth inning on doubles by Kelly Scribner and Breezy Bernard to take the 2-1 lead. However, Iowa State's Madison Jones put the Cyclones back on top in the bottom of the inning, smashing her first home run of the season, touching home behind Torrescano who singled in the previous at-bat.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth, Jones was at the plate again but the Broncos saved a run as the Iowa State freshman hit into a fielder's choice and Santa Clara third baseman Jordan Newell threw home to Bernard who tagged out pinch runner Erin Johnson (Miller) for the first out in the inning.
After Jones' at-bat, Rice came through with an RBI single and, after Torrescano was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by Kayla Hardiman, Iowa State second baseman Sara Davison singled to center field to drive in both Jones and pinch runner Evan Folks (Rice) to give the Cyclones a four-run lead.
In both her first start and first complete game of her Cyclone career, sophomore Taylor Smith (1-0) pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, two runs, walking one and striking out one.
Carissa Theis (2-6) took the loss for Santa Clara with 3.1 innings of work, giving up three runs on five hits with no walks and one strike out.
On Sunday, Iowa State will play a second game against the Gaels at 11 a.m. CST.
