MORAGA, Calif. - Playing their second game against St. Mary's in as many days, the Cyclones (9-15, 0-0 Big 12) recorded 11 hits in a 9-3 win over the Gaels (7-14, 0-0 PCSC) a day after falling to the home team, 9-4.
Junior Tori Torrescano was 3-for-3 with a walk on Sunday, driving in four runs, including two on her 22nd career homer, moving her to sole possession of third-place on the Iowa State home run record list. Freshman Jorden Smith also contributed three hits and an RBI in the contest while Erica Miller drove in two runs, giving her 77 career RBIs and tying her for fourth in the Iowa State record books.
Iowa State wasted no time against the Gaels, racking up three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead and dispatching of St. Mary's starter, Sarah Lira (1-1). Amber Ewert started the Cyclones off with a single and was sacrificed to second on a Sara Davison bunt. Miller collected her second RBI of the weekend, sending Ewert home on a double, and two batters later, Torrescano connected for her eighth home run of the season and RBIs 22 and 23.
Lira retired two of her five batters face in the first, allowing three runs on three hits before being replaced by Britany Linton who gave up a single to Sarah Rice before striking out Madison Jones to end the inning.
The Cyclones doubled their lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Ewert to score Jones from third and a groundout by Davison during the next at-bat that plated Smith. Miller pushed home her second run of the day, scoring Ewert with a single down the left field line to take the 6-0 lead and get Linton pulled in favor of Jessica Lemmon who earned the win over Iowa State on Saturday.
Torrescano crossed home, scoring an unearned run, in the top of the fifth on an RBI infield single by Smith. Torrescano doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball by St. Mary's catcher Christine Torrise.
After managing just one hit through four innings, St. Mary's broke through in its half of the fifth, posting two runs on three hits off Torrescano (6-9). Nicole Arce drew a walk to start the inning and scored the first Gaels' run on a triple from Lira. The next batter, Amelia Mcintosh, grounded out to short, plating Lira and cutting Iowa State's lead to five runs.
An error by St. Mary's third baseman Mandy Camuso led to two more Iowa State runs in the sixth. Batting second in the frame, Davison reached on Camuso's error and, after outs by Miller and Lexi Slater, came around to score with Ewert, who walked to lead off the inning, on a single by Torrescano, making the score 9-2.
Brittany Sabatini scored the final St. Mary's run, coming home on a wild pitch by Iowa State reliever Breeanna Holliday in the seventh inning.
Torrescano threw six innings, allowing four hits and two runs while both walking and striking out four of the 26 batters she faced.
On Wednesday the Cyclones are back on the road, headed to Creighton for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
