EL PASO, Texas - Iowa State junior Tori Torrescano drove in four runs Friday but the Cyclones (4-10, 0-0 Big 12) couldn't stop the Valparaiso (8-2, 0-0 Horizon League) offense, falling 16-7.
Torrescano recorded her fourth multi-RBI game of the season against the Crusaders, hitting two doubles on the night. Erica Miller extended her hitting streak to four games as she, Dalyn Varela and Lexi Slater each added two hits in the contest. The loss is the second for the Cyclones this season when the team has collected 10 or more hits.
In the circle, Torrescano (4-5) took the loss after giving up eight earned runs in 4.1 innings while allowing 11 hits, walking three and fanning four. Valpo's Sam McGee (4-1) defeated the Cyclones for the second time this season, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing six earned runs on seven Iowa State hits. McGee walked three batters and struck out two.
Trailing, 0-1 in the bottom of the first, Iowa State responded with three runs of its own as Torrescano doubled home Slater (single) and Sara Davison (error) before crossing home on an RBI single by Miller to take a 3-1 lead.
The Crusaders retook the lead in the top of the second, going up 5-3 on RBIs from Sara Strickland and Jordan Rutkowski and a wild pitch by Torrescano. Valpo added four more runs on five hits in the top of the fifth to grow the lead to 9-4 and tacked on another in the sixth.
Iowa State cut the lead to 10-7 with three runs, two off the bat of Torrescano, in the bottom of the sixth, but the Crusaders pulled away for good in the final inning, posting six more runs aided by a two-run home run by Rutkowski.
On Saturday, the Cyclones face off against Texas-San Antonio at 10:30 a.m. before playing host UTEP at 12:30 p.m. Both times central.
