AMES, Iowa – No. 10 Missouri had seven runs in the first two innings and kept Iowa State (14-32, 2-15 Big 12) off the bases in the first four frames as the Tigers (36-10, 13-7 Big 12) posted an 8-0 six-inning victory Saturday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
The Iowa State bats were muted by the outstanding pitching of Kristin Nottelmann, who was perfect through four innings of action. Tori Torrescano broke up all perfect game and no-hitter possibilities in the bottom of the fifth, leading off with a single through the middle of the infield. Sara Rice advanced Torrescano over to third on a sacrifice fly, but Jorden Smith could not bring her home, as she struck out the next at bat.
The Tigers got the eighth run they needed to enact the run-rule in the top of the sixth. Brianna Corwin picked up a single and promptly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Corrin Genovese brought her home on an RBI single to get to the 8-0 final.
The Tigers struck in the bottom of the first. Mackenzie Sykes sent a line drive off the wall for a single followed by another single from Jenna Marston and a walk by Ashley Fleming to load the bases for Kelsea Roth. Taylor Smith got Roth to hit a high fly ball, but it was just out of the reach of Cyclone centerfielder Amber Ewert as it cleared the wall, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead before an out was recorded.
The Tigers got two more to start the second as Ashtin Stephens hit a blooper into left field for a single, which was followed on next pitch by a Sykes home run to right field to give MU a 6-0 advantage. Fleming brought home another run on an RBI-single after Marston reached on a double to left-centerfield for a 7-0 Missouri advantage.
Nottelmann (12-3) pitched all six innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. Taylor Smith (4-4) posted the loss for the Cyclones, having thrown all six innings allowing eight runs on 13 hits while striking out four.
The series against Missouri wraps up tomorrow with first pitch slated for noon CST.
