WICHITA, Kan. – Iowa State opened up the Shocker Softball Classic with a 10-1 loss to San Diego State Friday at Wilkins Stadium. The loss dropped the Cyclones to 14-5 on the season while the Aztecs improved to 14-7 overall.
Story of the Game
Iowa State was able to get on the board first as the Cyclones got their first two on with Jorden Spendlove batting a single to right and Sara Rice reaching on an error at first base. Maddie Reese was able to advance Spendlove to third on a fielder's choice. Brittany Gomez put the Cyclones ahead 1-0 with a grounder to second base.
The lead was short lived though as San Diego State tied the game on a manufactured run with Leia Ruiz hitting a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch and stealing third base followed by scoring after an error by Rachel Hartman. The Cyclones were able to get two consecutive outs but SDSU was able to get two on as Sydnee Cable got hit by a pitch and Kayla Bufardeci walked. Hayley Miles cleared the bases with a 3-run homer to put the Aztecs ahead 4-1.
Up 6-1 headed to the bottom of the fifth, the Aztecs got a 2-RBI double from Dominique Dinner to move ahead 8-1. Two batters later, Patrice Jackson ended the game with a 2-run homer to give SDSU the final 10-1 margin.
On Deck
Iowa State has a doubleheader tomorrow. The Cyclones will start out with a game against North Dakota at 10:30 a.m. followed by a match-up versus Kansas City following that around 1 p.m.
