Brown Moves On To NCAA Championship, ISU Takes 3rd

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Iowa State gymnastics team (8-13 overall, 2-2 Big 12) put up their second-highest score of the season to take third place at the NCAA Regional Championship in Baton Rouge, La. Cyclone junior Caitlin Brown punched her ticket to NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala. with a career-high score of 39.400 in the all-around. Brown qualified as the top all-around performer at the regional who was not on a qualifying team.
The Cyclones were one spot outside of the top-two finish they needed to qualify for NCAA Championships as a team. The region also featured No. 3 LSU, No. 10 Stanford and No. 13 Auburn.
Floor Exercise
Iowa State had several stand-out performers in their third rotation as they put up a season-high team score of 49.300 on floor. The Cyclones were led by the senior duo Henrietta Green and Milan Ivory, who closed out the rotation with matching scores of 9.9. Brown also matched a career high with her score of 9.875. However, one of the most valuable routines of the meet for Iowa State came from sophomore Kristen DeCosta, who put up a new career-high score of 9.850.
Balance Beam
The Cyclones got off to the ideal start, putting up a season-high score of 49.175 on beam in their first rotation. Camille Santerre-Gervais led the way with a new career-high of 9.900 for the senior for St.-Lazare, Quebec. Fellow senior Michelle Shealy followed closely behind with a 9.875, her second-high score of the season. Tremendous routines by Brown (9.850) and Hailey Johnson (9.8) were the icing on the cake in Iowa State's great start.
Vault
The Cyclones got two strong performances to book-end their vault rotation. It was started by sophomore Alex Marasco's 9.800 to lead off the rotation and came to close as Brown set a new career high with her score of 9.875. Freshman Allie Hansen also got a taste of the big stage as she scored a career-best 9.725 for Iowa State. The Cyclones' team score on vault was 48.900.
Uneven Parallel Bars
Seniors Shealy and Green led the way in the Cyclones' final rotation of the meet, with matching scores of 9.850. It was a season-high on bars for Shealy, who was in the lead-off position for Iowa State. Brown also was sure to punch her ticket to NCAA Championships with a score of 9.800, assuring her the top all-around score of the night of gymnasts to not qualify with their team.

Caitlin Brown will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to represent the Cyclones in the all-around competition at the 2014 NCAA Championships April 18-20.
