AMES, Iowa - Record-breaking performances on balance beam by Caitlin Brown and Sammie Pearsall led the Iowa State gymnastics team Sunday during its tri-meet as part of Beauty and the Beast. The Cyclones finished second with a team score of 195.950, its highest-score for a second meet of the season since 2004. ISU just missed out on first as Oregon State posted a 195.957 while Southeast Missouri finished with 193.300.
In front of 5,603 fans, the fourth-largest crowd in school history, the Cyclones improved its team score by over two points in the last week led by a 49.425 on balance beam, the third-best in school history. Brown and Pearsall led the way with a pair of 9.95s, tying the school record in the event.
Balance Beam
The Cyclones had a record-breaking performance on beam with two tied school records and five broken career highs. The overall team score of 49.425 tied for third highest in school history. Sammie Pearsall and Caitlin Brown both earned scores of 9.950, which tie the school record. Other notable performances on beam were Haylee Young who scored a 9.900, and Allie Hansen who beat her career high with a 9.825.
Vault
Iowa State started out the meet with an impressive team vault score of 48.925. This score gave the Cyclones the lead after the first rotation. Caitlin Brown and Haylee Young led the team for this event with matching scores of 9.825. Alex Marasco also added a 9.800 to the team score with her vault.
Floor Exercise
Haylee Young placed first at the meet on floor with a score of 9.850. Caitlin Brown scored a 9.800 and Kelsey Paz scored a 9.775, bringing the team score to 48.850.
Uneven Bars
Freshman Hilary Green led the way for the Cyclones on bars with a 9.825, tying for first at the meet. The overall team score for Iowa State on this event was a 48.750. Caitlin Brown and Haylee Young posted scores of 9.800 and 9.750, respectively.
All-Around
Caitlin Brown just missed out on a career-high in the All-Around, but still picked up the win with a 39.375, just missing her career-best of 39.400 set at last season's NCAA Regional. Haylee Young was a close second with a 39.325 while Kelsey Paz impvoed by half-a-point on last's week's performance with a 38.950.
Coming Up
The Cyclones will be travelling to Morgantown, West Virginia to compete against George Washington and West Virginia. The meet will take place on next Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Central time.
