AUSTIN, Texas - The Iowa State soccer team (5-9-0, 0-5-0 Big 12) drops a hard-fought game to Texas (5-3-4, 2-1-1 Big 12) by the score of 2-1 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Texas came out attacking early, but the Cyclone defense held strong. Iowa State closed out the first half with a couple great looks from senior midfielder Lindsay Frank. The two Big 12 teams went into the half scoreless.
In the 60th minute, Longhorn Mikayla Flores was able to shake loose of the Cyclone defense and fired a laser that deflected off the crossbar and right to the feet of Alexa Adams. Adams collected it cleanly and put the ball into the left corner.
Iowa State didn't wait long to answer. Freshman Emily Steil put a perfect through ball on for Koree Willer who had a one-on-one with Texas goalkeeper Abby Smith. Smith came hard at Willer and was called for a foul inside the box and was given a yellow card. Willer easily buried the penalty kick to even the score at one goal apiece.
Abby Smith booted a goal kick well across half to Kelsey Shimmick who relayed it on to Alexa Adams who blasted in her second goal of the game from 24 yards that dropped right over the reach of Hendon and into the back of the net. Adams' second goal of the game proved to be the game-winner.
Turning Point of the Game
80' – After the Cyclones evened the contest at 1-1 off of penalty kick from Koree Willer, the Longhorns were able to find Adams again and she buried an absolutely incredible goal that no one could have saved to take a 2-1 lead with just ten minutes left.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
The team. After a rough start to conference play, the entire Cyclone team really came together tonight on the road against a good Texas team. From top to bottom, the Iowa State players gave it their all for all 90 minutes. After allowing Texas to score the first goal, the team didn't hang their heads or back down one bit. They came firing right back and scored a goal of their own.
Coach Said It
“I thought we came out strong tonight,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “Going into halftime 0-0. Everybody really stepped up in the first half and played really well. Very strong defensively and some nice looks at goal. Second half, we really took it to them. We got some good looks at goal from the corner kicks and some great shots on frame. When we got scored on, we answered and that was a big step for this team coming back and facing that adversity. That second goal that they scored was world-class. That thing was amazing. We fought to the very end and that's what we want to see out of our team every week, every game and be competitive and get better. I felt everyone stepped up tonight and there was some good performances out there.”
Game Notes
* Junior Koree Willer scored her team-high fifth goal of the season.
