NORMAN, Oklahoma – Despite a career-best scoring performance from Nikki Moody, the Iowa State women's basketball team fell to Oklahoma 75-66 Wednesday morning at the Lloyd Noble Center. The loss dropped ISU to 14-7 overall, 5-5 in Big 12 play, OU improved 14-7 on the season and are now 8-2 in conference competition.
Nikki Moody led the Cyclone effort, posting a career-high 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field while also contributing five assists. Moody's 30 points is the first 30-point game by a Cyclone since Hallie Christofferson's 33-point effort against Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 8, 2013.
How It Happened
After trading leads early on the Sooners ran off 17 of 21 points to get up to a 24-10 lead. Though Oklahoma was committing more fouls, ISU could not take advantage on the scoreboard, shooting just 3-of-13 from the field before head coach Bill Fennelly was forced to call his first timeout down nine.
Things were not going better out of the timeout as the Sooners reeled off five more points to the aforementioned 24-10 margin. A Moody lay-in looked to have gotten the Cyclones back on track, but the Sooners continued to fire from deep, making five 3-pointers en route to a 32-17 lead.
Down 38-25 to start the second half, Iowa State found itself in a bigger hole as OU ran out to a 20-point lead at 47-27. On the back of Moody, the Cyclones battled back to reduce the deficit back to the halftime margin of 13 points, but Peyton Little hit her third 3-pointer of the game to restore Oklahoma's lead to 16 points at 55-39.
The Cyclones were able to reduce the OU lead to 12 points on multiple occasions in the second half, but each time the Sooners had an answer and were able to restore its larger advantage. It was not until 3:30 to go that ISU was able to reduce the deficit to single-digits as Nikki Moody hit a corner 3-pointer to make it 67-58 Sooners. However, Little again struck, making a corner 3-ball of her own to restore OU's 12-point lead and guide the Sooners to victory.
