DES MOINES, Iowa – Brittany Gomez broke Iowa State's record for runs scored in a career as she helped lead the Cyclones to a 7-2 win over Drake Tuesday night at Buel Field. The win improves ISU to 22-20 while Drake falls to 27-15.
Gomez helped lead the ISU offense with a pair of hits and a stolen base. Lexi Slater and Maddie Reese recorded home runs and Nychole Antillon had a two-run double to power the Cyclones out to a 5-0 lead before Drake stepped up to the plate.
Big First Inning
Brittany Gomez led off with a hit, getting up to a 10-game hit streak for the third time in her career. It looked like it would not be much as Kailee Smith got back-to-back outs. However, Lexi Slater got ISU on the board with a big home run to left, her seventh of the season and 25th of her career to put the Cyclones ahead 2-0.
That lead quickly became three as Maddie Reese recorded her 10th homer of the season the next pitch, a solo shot to left-center. Reese became the 10th player in program history to record at least 10 homers in a season.
ISU was not done as Jorden Spendlove reached on a Drake error, and Kelsey McFarland drew a walk. Nychole Antillon then drove in her first runs in nearly three weeks as she fired a shot high off the wall in right to bring home another two runs and get ISU ahead 5-0.
Erring on the Home Side
While the Iowa State bats were productive, the Cyclones benefitted from some fielding mistakes by Drake. Gomez led off the top of the second reaching on an error, and with runners on second and third and two outs, Reese grounded one to short, which Drake was unable to field, allowing Gomez and Cathlin Bingham, who reached on a walk, to score and make it 7-0 Cyclones.
Gomez's run marked her 121st career run, breaking ISU's school record of 120 previously held by Jenny Condon (1986-89).
Roggentien Rules
Stacy Roggentien got the nod in the circle, and was once again terrific for the Cyclones. She kept Drake off the scoreboard for the first four innings and, for the most part also kept them off the bases. For the game, Roggentien pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out four to earn her ninth win of the season.
Drake got a run each in the fifth and sixth inning. In the fifth, the Bulldogs successfully ran a double-steal, with Tasha Alexander taking second and allowing Kaitlyn Finneran to score from third to break up the shutout. In the bottom of the sixth, Hayley Nybo lined a solo home run, just over the wall in right to reduce the ISU lead to 7-2.
