LUBBOCK, Texas – The Iowa State women's basketball team (11-5, 3-2 Big 12) lost a 69-66 heartbreaker to Texas Tech (10-7, 1-5 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon. The Cyclones rallied from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime, and got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Seanna Johnson in the loss.
How it Happened
Bridget Carleton got Iowa State rolling on offense early, as the Cyclones jumped out to a 10-2 lead just over four minutes into the contest. Carleton scored seven of ISU's initial 10 points and dished out an assist on ISU's other field goal during the hot start. The Cyclones would maintain their lead through the entire first period and led 19-14 after 10 minutes of action.
Iowa State stretched its lead to as large as eight again early in the second quarter after Seanna Johnson and Meredith Burkhall hit jumpers on back-to-back possessions to give the Cyclones a 23-15 lead with 8:38 to play in the half. The Lady Raiders stayed within striking distance however, as they ran off a 7-0 run in under two minutes, including four points from Ivonne Cook-Taylor. Carleton would respond right back with a three-pointer to give ISU a 26-22 lead at the 5:22 mark of the second quarter.
The Cyclones were up 30-27 after a first half in which Iowa State led the entire way. Carleton had a team-high 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the half, followed by Johnson, who put up eight points and eight boards in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Lady Raiders took hold of momentum coming out of the locker room, opening the third quarter on a 9-0 run, to go up 36-30 just over two minutes into the half. TTU's Japreece Dean hit from long distance on back-to-back possessions to help Texas Tech take its first lead of the game. TTU extended its lead to as many as 11 on three different occasions. In each instance, the Cyclones responded. Baskets from Jadda Buckley and Seanna Johnson late in the quarter helped close the gap to 51-43 after three. In total, the Cyclones were outscored 24-13 in the stanza.
The fourth quarter was a different story, as the Cyclones went on a 14-4 run over the first six minutes of play to storm ahead 57-55. The run was jump-started by Nicole Blaskowsky's first field goal of the game, a three-pointer 27 seconds into the stanza. It was a total team effort on both ends to take back the lead, as ISU's next 11 points were scored by five different players. Buckley drilled a triple with 4:58 to play to tie the game up at 55-55, before a pair of three throws by Johnson put the Cyclones back in front.
Carleton scored the Cyclones' last four points, including a lay-up with 23 seconds remaining to put Iowa State ahead 61-59. TTU's Dayo Olabode knocked down a pair of free throws from the charity stripe with nine seconds remaining to send the game to overtime, knotted at 61-61.
Johnson scored five points in the first 2:15 of overtime, converting an and-one opportunity to put the Cyclones up 66-63 with 2:45 remaining. However, Cook-Taylor and Rayven Brooks both got jumpers to go, putting TTU back ahead as the ISU offense stalled late in the game. The Cyclones were unable to score in the final 2:45 and Texas Tech held on to win, 69-66.
