AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's basketball team (11-9, 3-6 Big 12) fell at home to No. 21 Oklahoma (15-5, 6-3 Big 12), 77-71 on Saturday afternoon. Junior guard Seanna Johnson paced the Cyclones with 18 points, followed by Jadda Buckley with 16.
How it Happened
It was a first quarter of momentum swings, with the Sooners taking control in the early going, behind an 8-0 spurt to take an 11-4 lead at the midway point of the period. The Sooner run took just 1:11 of game time, during which OU was 4-of-4 from the field. The Cyclones punched back however, responding with a Nicole Blaskowsky three-pointer out of an ISU timeout.
Trailing 17-9 with under two minutes to play in the quarter, Iowa State put together an 8-0 run of its own to knot things up after 10 minutes of action. Madison Baier got the spurt started with a bucket inside, followed by a Buckley triple on the following possession. Emily Durr tied the game at 17-17 when she was fouled on a three-point attempt before the buzzer and knocked in all three free throw attempts.
Trailing by two midway through the second quarter, the Cyclones were able to string together another flurry to take their biggest lead of the game. A 10-0 run was sparked by buckets on three-consecutive possessions by Meredith Burkhall, Johnson and Buckley. Burkhall and Buckley would each hit jumpers before the Cyclone run was stopped by a Shaya Kellogg free throw, giving Iowa State a 35-28 lead at halftime. Emily Durr had a game-high 10 points at the break, followed by Buckley and Burkhall with seven each.
The Sooners went on a 9-2 run to open the second half and erase the Iowa State lead, tying the score at 37-37 less than three minutes into the third quarter. The Cyclones were outscored 26-13 during the period, and were just 4-of-16 from the field, including 1-of-7 on three-point attempts. Meanwhile, Oklahoma hit four triples in the period after making just one in the first half. The Sooners led 54-48 after the third.
The Cyclones refused to go away, putting together a 9-2 run early in the final quarter to cut the OU lead to just one at 60-59 with 6:13 to play on a pair of Buckley free throws. That was as close as it would get, as Oklahoma would score the game's next six points and go on to win, 77-71.
