AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) came out on top against Nicholls (1-1, 0-0 SLC) by a score of 68-44 inside Hilton Coliseum Thursday night.
Freshman Tjaša Turnšek recorded her first career double-double tonight with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting and 13 rebounds. Sienna Harvey posted a well-rounded 15 points, five rebounds and four assists while Mya Babbitt chipped in three more makes from downtown to finish the night with 11 points.
How it Happened
Turnšek got the scoring started for ISU, as she converted an old fashioned three-point play with a floater inside the paint to give Iowa State the early lead. Iowa State looked to work inside, as Turnšek and her frontcourt running mate Xiao Zhang were able to get into the bonus within the first two minutes of the quarter. Babbitt continued her hot shooting from deep, knocking down the team's first three-pointer with 1:22 left. The Cyclones led 18-13 at the end of the frame, as Iowa State couldn't capitalize on getting in the bonus early in the quarter.
Two quick fast break layups to start the second quarter led to a Nicholls timeout at the 8:14 mark. Harvey went on her own personal 7-0 run in the middle of the frame to give Iowa State their biggest lead (31-18), headlined by her first three-pointer of the season off an offensive rebound from Ashleigh Connor. The Cyclones ended the first half up 36-23, with Harvey leading the way with 11 points.
Nicholls trimmed the lead down to eight with seven minutes left, keeping ISU scoreless until Connor hit a triple at the 6:46 mark. Turnšek continued to work inside on both sides of the floor, securing her first points-rebounds double-double of her career in the frame, leading Iowa State to a 50-32 lead at the end of three.
Babbitt drilled two quick threes to increase the lead to 21 with seven minutes remaining. The Cyclones went on to win 68-44.
