Softball Drops 3-2 Decision To DePaul

LAFAYETTE, La. – Iowa State (0-2) dropped a 3-2 nail-biter to DePaul (1-2) on Saturday morning at the 31st Annual Louisiana Classic. The Cyclones tallied eight base hits on the day, doubling the Blue Demons, but were unable to manufacture runs late to overcome an early deficit.
Senior Rachel Hartman went 2-of-4 at the plate with two RBIs in the game, while Cathlin Bingham went 2-of-3 with a stolen base and one run scored.

The Cyclones got on the board right away in the bottom of the first inning. Kelsey McFarland reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a Talyn Lewis walk with two outs in the frame. Hartman, hitting in the designated player slot for Iowa State, then stepped to the plate and laced an RBI single through the left side to score McFarland and give ISU a 1-0 lead.
DePaul responded with a critical two-out rally in the top half of the second inning. A hit batter, followed by a double for Alysia Rodriguez put Blue Demon runners on second and third. Hayden Christensen then reached on an infield single, but a Cyclone throwing error allowed two runs to score. Dylan Christensen later hit an RBI double to center to extend the DPU lead to 3-1.
Bingham and McFarland started off the bottom of the fifth inning with back-to-back singles and Hartman once again capitalized. The native of Las Flores, Calif. ripped an RBI single to center, scoring Bingham from second, to cut the DePaul advantage to 3-2. However, Hartman was left stranded on second when the Blue Demons got out of the inning.
Iowa State made one last push in the bottom of the seventh, as McFarland and Talyn Lewis got aboard to open the inning. However, the DePaul defense made a stand in the end to hold on for the win.

The Cyclones take on Southern Miss later today at 11:30 a.m. at Lamson Park in Lafayette, La.
