LAFAYETTE, La. – Iowa State (2-2) defeated Ball State (1-4) by a score of 7-4 on Sunday at the 31st Annual Louisiana Classic. Junior Kelsey McFarland went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, a double and a home run to lead the way for the Cyclones.
Starting pitcher Emma Hylen picked up her first win of the 2017 season, going fiving innings while giving up two runs on just three hits. The sophomore also struck out five Cardinal batters in the outing.
Iowa State 7, Ball State 4
Iowa State came out of the gates strong offensively. After missing out on a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the first, the Cyclones broke through for five runs in the third. An RBI double from McFarland got things going, bringing speedy pinch runner Megan Schweitzer around to score.
Iowa State would later load the bases for freshman Talyn Lewis, who shot a single up the middle for an RBI. Fellow freshman Jaiden Johnson followed suit with another RBI single to give ISU a 3-0 lead. Lewis and Sami Williams would eventually come around to score when Kirsten Caudle reached on a BSU error, giving the Cyclones a 5-0 cushion.
Meanwhile, Hylen, with the help of her defense kept the Ball State offensive attack in check. The Cyclones executed two double plays early, and Hylen kept the Cardinals off the board through five innings.
McFarland added to an already outstanding game by crushing a solo home run to right-center in the top of the sixth frame. The shot, which gave Iowa State a 6-0 lead, was ISU's second of the season.
The Ball State offense found its rhythm in the bottom of the sixth inning, bringing four runs to the plate. Hylen exited early in the frame, and Savannah Sanders entered in relief, giving up two runs on three hits.
Kaila Konz helped Iowa State get one of the runs back in the top of the seventh. The junior from West Des Moines, Iowa, looped an RBI double into left field to score Logan Schaben and give the Cyclones a 7-4 advantage.

Iowa State closes out the 31st Annual Louisiana Classic later today with an 12:15 a.m. match-up against DePaul.
