Cyclones Open Weekend With 11-3 Victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Iowa State (3-3) defeated Tennessee State (3-2), 11-3, in the opening game of TSU's Tiger Classic on Friday. Talyn Lewis and Rachel Hartman each hit a home run to power the Cyclones to their best offensive output of the season.
Starter Savannah Sanders logged her first win of the season to move to 1-2, while Emma Hylen notched her first save of 2017.

The Cyclones continued their trend of getting early offense in their first game of the Tiger Classic. Following back-to-back walks for Cathlin Bingham and Kelsey McFarland, Lewis, a freshman, stepped to the plate with two on and one out. Lewis launched a three-run homer to center field for the first dinger of her Cyclone career, giving ISU a 3-0 advantage.
Iowa State has now scored first in five of its six games this season, and has put a run on the board in the first inning of four contests.
Hartman provided more fireworks in the third inning. Following McFarland's second drawn walk of the game, Hartman crushed her first home run of the season, and the seventh of her career, to left-center. The senior's trip around the bases extended the Iowa State lead to 5-0.
Tennessee responded with a pair of runs of their own in the home half of the inning, including a solo home run from Danica Gleason.
Iowa State put one run on the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, which included a pair of RBI base hits for McFarland. Sami Williams also chipped in an RBI double in the fifth. Three more Cyclone runs came across in the final frame, as Kirsten Caudle recorded an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI base hit for Jackie Chairez.
Iowa State starting pitcher Savannah Sanders went 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits to get the win. Emma Hylen was strong in relief, going 3.0 innings, while giving up no runs and no hits, with a strikeouts.

Iowa State faces Alabama A&M later today at the Tiger Classic. The Cyclones and Lady Bulldogs are set to face-off at 1:00 p.m. CT at TSU's Tiger Field.
