ST. LOUIS - Iowa State gymnast Haylee Young finished off a noteworthy season with her first appearance in the NCAA Championship on Friday afternoon. The junior earned an all-around score of 39.1875 to tie for 16th place in the all-around competition in Semifinal #1.
Young started off the meet on floor exercise in the first rotation, performing one of her best routines this season to tie for 13th place in Semifinal #1. The judges rewarded her with a 9.875 to give her a strong start in the competition. She then moved on to vault in the second rotation, sticking her landing for a 9.775, placing her in a four-way tie for 277th in the competition. After a bye in the third rotation, Young competed on the uneven bars, performing a strong routine. However, a small step on her dismount brought her lowest score of the meet with a 9.725. To finish her NCAA Championship debut, Young competed on balance beam in the fifth rotation. The Des Moines native showed confidence in her performance, hitting her series strong, but the dismount was the deciding factor again as a small hop brought her score to a 9.8125.
After missing a qualifying score by tenths of a point in the past two seasons, Young was a long-awaited competitor in the NCAA Championship. Since her freshman season, the local gymnast has been a standout on the roster for ISU. In 2017, Young earned Iowa State's individual high scores on beam and the all-around and earned 10 scores at or above 9.900 on the season. With three successful seasons under her belt, the Cyclones are excited to see Young return for her senior season in 2018.
