HAMPTON, Va. – The Iowa State wrestling team opened the Virginia Duals with its second consecutive win, defeating Virginia, 21-18. The Cyclones and Cavaliers split the contest in total bouts won, 5-5, but the Cyclones' bonus-point victories lifted them to victory.
Iowa State will wrestle No. 10 Arizona State at noon CT and then will await their placement in either the gold, silver or bronze bracket. If placed in the silver or bronze bracket, they will wrestle again this afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
How It Happened
The first dual of the tournament came down to the final bout between the Cyclones and the Cavaliers. It featured heavyweights Marcus Harrington and Tyler Love. After two periods, the two had exchanged escapes and the match was tied 1-1. Harrington secured a third-period takedown and fended off a late attack to take the match 3-2, and secure the victory for the Cardinal and Gold.
Iowa State had to erase an early 8-0 lead from Virginia. It started with Kanen Storr and was punctuated by Jarrett Degen and Chase Straw.
Storr scrapped to a 5-3 victory over Virginia's Sam Martino. Storr notched two takedowns in the contest. Degen put the Cyclones up 9-8 after he locked up a fall in just 1:00 against Jake Keating.
Straw padded the ISU lead with a 24-6 technical fall in 6:34 over Fred Green of Virginia. Straw was scoring from every position in his match at 157 pounds. He only scored one takedown in the contest, but bolstered three, four-point near falls, two, two-point near falls and two reversals.
UVA scrapped back, winning bouts at 165 and 174 pounds before Dane Pestano put the Cyclones back on top. Pestano was outstanding from his feet, scoring eight takedowns in a 20-7 major decision over Michael Battista. He also scored on a two-point near fall and rode for 2:56.
The Cavalier's won the bout at 197 pounds to tie the dual at 18-18. Iowa State's bonus points allowed for Harrington's third period takedown to seal the contest for the Cyclones.
