TEMPE, Arizona - The Iowa State gymnastics team opened the season scoring 195.175 at the Arizona State Quad Meet, outscoring No. 14 Auburn (third, 193.950), No. 20 Iowa (fourth, 193.000) and hosts Arizona State (second, 194.675) to begin the season 3-0. The Cyclones scored thier best score to open a season since 195.600 at 2007 Cancun Classic. This is also the first time ISU defeated two ranked teams in the same meet since the 2013 NCAA Regional.Â
Head Coach Jay Ronayne said he felt very calm walking into tonight's meet.Â
"I knew there would be some adversity in this meet and we started out with some on floor," Ronayne said. "I'm proud the way our team handled themselves today. I'm very proud of them, and the poise they showed today. I am very, very excited for what this team has in store for the rest of the season."
Assistant coach Kristin White was happy with the way freshmen Ariana Orrego and Sophia Steinmeyer competed.Â
"The minute the freshmen stepped on campus they have done a fantastic job for us," White observed. "We are just really proud of them and they were ready to go and we have been excited for them to be a part of the team."
Balance Beam
Beam was the last event the Cyclone participated in Saturday. The Cyclones shined on the beam as the earned a score of 49.025. Everyone in the Cyclones lineup scored over a 9.700 and above. Senior Kelsey Paz led the way and tied a career-high on beam with a 9.875. Paz and Haylee Young placed in first and second overall, respectively, on the apparatus.Â

 "I think the team did a phenomenal job of coming through adversity. Last year they struggled on beam and to end going with a 49 and I think it's just fantastic and I am so excited for them.Â
Vault
Iowa State was the second team to participate in the vault. They scored 48.975 as Meaghan Sievers places first overall with a 9.875. Freshman Sophia Steinmeyer followed closely with a 9.850, and Haylee Young recorded a 9.800. Kelsey Paz and Ariana Orrego rounded out the scoring with a 9.750 and 9.700, respectively.
Floor ExerciseÂ
Iowa States started the meet on floor and finished with a score of 48.650. Meaghan Sievers stumbled early, but the team showed great poise the during the rest of event. Haylee Young led the way for the Cyclones with a 9.825. Kelsey Paz was the next highest score with a 9.800, followed by Ariana Orrego with a 9.775, Briana Ledesma with a 9.650, and Sophia Steinmeyer with a 9.600.
Uneven BarsÂ
The Cyclones were on the bars in the third rotation of the meet scoring 48.525. Hilary Green posted a 9.775 leading the way for the Cyclones. Meaghan Sievers had the next best score earning a 9.750 followed by Haylee Young with 9.725. The Cyclones rounded out the bars with Kelsey Paz scoring a 9.650, and Laura Burns scoring a 9.625.
All-Around
Iowa State has four all-around gymnasts Saturday night: Haylee Young, Kelsey Paz, Meaghan Sievers, and Ariana Orrego. Senior Haylee Young took first place, earning a 39.200, and fellow senior Kelsey Paz finished third earning a 39.075.
