IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State women's basketball team (6-2, 0-0 Big 12) fell 73-70 at No. 16 Iowa (6-2, 0-0 Big Ten) on Wednesday night. The Cyclones battled back from a 14-point first-half deficit to take a three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Iowa guard Tania Davis hit a 3-pointer in the closing moments to win it for the Hawkeyes.
How It Happened
Iowa State struggled to find its footing offensively in the early going, and the Hawkeyes capitalized with a fast start of their own. Iowa took a double-digit lead at 17-6 less than six minutes into the game. The senior duo of Bridget Carleton and Alexa Middleton helped right the ship with baskets late in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer from Middleton at the buzzer to make it 21-11 through 10 minutes of action.
The script was flipped in the second quarter, as the Cyclones were humming on offense, shooting 10-of-18 from the field. An 8-0 run midway through the period tied the game at 29-29 on a Kristin Scott triple. Iowa responded with a strong close to the half to take a 40-36 lead at the intermission.
Middleton had a game-high 15 points at halftime, to go with two assists and two steals. Scott tallied eight points, making all three of her field goal attempts, and pulled down five boards in the first half.
A 7-0 Cyclone run to open the second half propelled Iowa State to its first lead of the night, going ahead 43-40 on a Meredith Burkhall layup. A back-and-forth quarter would ensue, with the Cyclones scoring the final five points of the period to lead 56-53 with 10 minutes to play. ISU locked down on the defensive end, as the Hawkeyes went the final 6:28 of the quarter without a field goal.
The see-saw affair continued until the game's final seconds. The game went through 24 ties and 10 lead changes, but ultimately the triple by Davis with 2.6 seconds remaining would clinch the game for Iowa.
