AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-15, 0-9 Big 12) fell 2-1 to No. 25 Kansas (12-4-3, 4-2-3 Big 12) on senior night Thursday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones rallied after falling behind 2-0 midway through the second half, as Courtney Powelll found the back of the net in the 77th minute. However, Iowa State was unable to equalize in the closing moments despite a strong offensive push late in regulation.
How It Happened…
Following a back-and-forth opening 30 minutes, the Jayhawks were able to strike first off the foot of their leading goal-scorer, Katie McClure. McClure got on the end of a Kailey Lane cross and finished from six yards out to score her 13th goal of the season, giving KU a 1-0 advantage they would take into the halftime intermission.
Kansas added to its lead in the 62nd minute, as Ceri Holland was able to sneak her shot into the bottom left corner of the goal off an assist from Grace Wiltgen, putting the Jayhawks ahead 2-0.
The Cyclones refused to go away quietly on senior night, however. Forward Kassi Ginther played a ball to fellow junior Courtney Powell, who won possession and went racing the other way. Powell unleashed a shot from beyond the right-hand corner of the 18-yard box, and buried it over the outstretched hands of KU goalkeeper Sarah Peters, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Cyclones earned a number of quality chances late in regulation, outshooting Kansas 11-8 in the second half, but were unable to send the match to overtime.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Courtney Powell. The junior gave the Cyclones life offensively, firing a game-high four shots, with three on goal. She scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute to put ISU within striking distance.
