AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (4-1) began its busy weekend inside Hilton Coliseum with a comfortable 90-40 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-5) Friday night inside Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State had four in double figures, led by Ashley Joens' 20 points, her fourth 20-point game of the season, and eight rebounds. Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw notched a career-high 15 points, 14 in the first half, along with dishing out nine assists, which was also a career-high. Joining them in double figures was Inès Nezerwa (14) and Kristin Scott (11).
How It Happened
A scrappy first few minutes eventually opened up in favor of ISU, as the Cyclones went on a 13-0 run in just under two minutes to build a 15-3 lead. The Cyclones' fast start came thanks to draining 4-of-7 shots to open the contest, including three from deep. The teams combined for nearly three minutes off the board, but finished with a flurry as a Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw lay-in and a Jade Thurmon 3-pointer gave the home side a 21-7 lead.
The ISU defense, which racked up six first-quarter steals, and were at it again in the second, as the Cyclones posted nine steals across the first half en route to forcing 14 UAPB turnovers. The Golden Lions were back within 12, but ISU sparked a quick 6-0 run to push its lead to 18 at 34-16.
Iowa State surged ahead in the second half, holding UAPB scoreless for a 7:45-stretch of the third period. ISU used a 25-0 run which included 16-straight missed shots and five turnovers by Pine Bluff, allowed the Cyclones to pull ahead by an unassailable 43-point lead.
With the result locked up, Iowa State was able to get many of its starters some rest, with the four in double figures being able to watch from the bench for the entirety of the final period.
Players of Note
Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw had the best day of her young Cyclone career. The Indianola native posted a career-high 15 points, 14 coming in the first half, while also notching her career-high in assists with nine.
Ashley Joens was able to rack up her fourth 20-point game in five this season, finishing with 20 points, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line. She also tied the team-high with eight rebounds.
Inès Nezerwa first double-figures game of the season came on Friday, as the senior recorded 14 points in just 14 minutes.
