AUBURN, Alabama – The Iowa State gymnastics team (0-3, 0-0 Big 12) fell to the No. 7 Auburn Tigers 195.575-197.350. The Cyclones earned season high scores on every event and earned a season high total score.
Maddie Diab extended her streak, scoring a 9.900 on floor at every meet this season. She was one of 11 separate gymnasts to tie or set a career or season high. Josie Bergstrom set two career highs, earning a 9.850 on vault and a 9.750 on beam. Iowa State also saw a breakout night from Makayla Maxwell. She scored a 9.900 on vault, earning a season high and taking home the event win.
"We knew that we were going to be building through the season," said head coach Jay Ronayne. "We're happy that the trend is going up and we anticipate it will continue to do so. I know we'll have lots of opportunities ahead of us to get where we need to be. This team is willing to put in the work. I think the scores tonight speak volumes to the amount of effort and focus the girls have right now. To have so many personal records being achieved, I think we still have room to grow and we're going to keep plugging away at it."
Vault
Iowa State were strong on the vault, scoring a season high team score of 49.150. Makayla Maxwell led the team with a score of 9.900, showing why she was just shy of All-America honors last season. Emilie Hong and Josie Bergstrom closely followed with matching scores of 9.850. Hong's score was a season high, and Bergstrom's was a career high. Kelsey Boychuk also tied her season high, with a 9.800, and Ariana Orrego rounded out the scores with a 9.750.
Bars
The Cyclones began their night on bars, earning a season high team score of 49.025. Ana Palacios scored a career high 9.850 to lead the team, with Makayla Maxwell following close behind with a 9.825. Hannah Loyim also earned a new career high of 9.800. Laura Cooke and Loganne Basuel rounded out the scoring with matching 9.775s.
Floor
Iowa State earned a team score of 49.025 on the floor, a season high. Maddie Diab continued her streak of 9.900s on the floor, leading the team for the third week in a row. Andrea Maldonado earned a new season high on the floor, scoring a 9.875. Kelsey Boychuk and Laura Cooke matched scores, each posting a 9.825. Boychuk's was a season high. Rachel Wilke made her floor debut, earning a 9.600 to round out the scores.
Beam
The Cyclones also earned a season high team score on beam, scoring a total 48.375. Hannah Loyim and Meixi Semple led the team, each scoring a 9.850. Loyim's score was a career high while Semple's was a season high. Loganne Basuel scored a 9.775 while Josie Bergstrom earned a new career high of her own with a 9.750. Sophia Steinmeyer rounded out the scores with a 9.150.
