PORTLAND, Oregon – No. 5 Iowa State (5-0, 0-0 Big 12) handed Michigan State (6-1, 0-0 Big 10) its first loss of the season with the 80-49 victory in the first round of the Phil Knight Invitational. The Cyclones are 5-0 for the second-straight season and 11th time under head coach Bill Fennelly as they move on to the championship game.
Iowa State surged ahead on a 20-point lead of 37-17 to bring into halftime, led by Stephanie Soares with nine points. Soares also shined defensively, deflecting four shots by the time the clock hit 8:30 in the second period. The Cyclones broke away in the second quarter and never looked back, shooting 46.9 percent from the field while holding MSU to 28.3 percent through the night.
Soares surpassed her career high with six blocks while turning in her second double-double of the season with 23 points to match her career high to go along with 11 rebounds.
Emily Ryan neared the 20-point mark with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Ryan also closed in on a double-double, dishing out eight dimes. Denae Fritz made for three Cyclones in double figures with 10 points, including three triples.
How it Happened
Soares recorded two blocks within the first 90 seconds of play, while Ashley Joens capitalized to shoot the first triple of the game to make the score 3-2. Michigan State hit shots to take the lead before a Morgan Kane layup tied it at 8. The layup set the Cyclones on a 10-0 run to begin building a lead that held up at 16-8. After one period, ISU nailed four beyond the arc on only eight attempts.
ISU held Michigan State scoreless for over three minutes to begin the second while the Cyclones took a double-digit lead of 23-12. Iowa State continued the strong defensive effort as MSU added just five points in the quarter, shooting at 20 percent.
Soares opened the second half of action with a layup to enter double figures. Ryan followed suit, driving up to the basket to notch her 11th point before the midway point of the third. Soares passed her previous career high of four blocks with 2:02 left in the quarter as the Cyclones closed the frame ahead 53-29.
ISU closed out the game on a 10-1 run to solidify the victory.
Player of the Game
Stephanie Soares entered the game with 10 blocks on the season before adding her career-high of six against the Spartans. Soares completed the second game of her career with 20-plus points and ended the night with 23 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks, three assists and a steal.
