WASHINGTON D.C. – Iowa State (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) picked up a pair of run-rule victories Sunday in Washington D.C. The Cyclones defeated Quinnipiac (0-2, 0-0 MAAC), 14-1, and Howard (2-4, 0-0 MEAC), 10-2, both in six innings.
Karlie Charles (2-0) and Saya Swain (3-0) each claimed decisions in the circle for Iowa State.
Iowa State combined for 13 extra-base hits across both games, including three triples and four home runs. Mikayla Ramos homered twice while Milaysia Ochoa and Kasey Simpson each went yard once.
Game One – Iowa State 14, Quinnipiac 1
The Iowa State bats were active in the Cyclones' first game of the day as ISU secured a run-rule victory over Quinnipiac, 14-1, in six innings.
Four Cyclones tallied multi-RBI performances in the win. Ochoa (2-of-4) headlined the victory with a career-high five RBIs, three of which came off a home run in the first inning. Ramos (3-of-3) also homered in the game and finished with a trio of RBIs.
Simpson brought home two runs as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate which included her first-career triple. Freshman Angelina Allen continued to produce in the top third of the lineup with a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Charles (2-0) picked up her second decision of the year in the circle after allowing only one run on two hits with six strikeouts.
The Cyclones started fast in the first inning with an RBI single from Allen, followed by Ochoa's three-run homer to give ISU a quick 4-0 advantage. Another home run in the second inning, a two-run shot from Ramos, extended Iowa State's lead to 6-0 after two innings.
ISU would tack on another run in the fourth and fifth innings to pull out in front, 8-0, but Quinnipiac would get one back in the bottom of fifth. The Cyclones exploded for seven runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Ochoa and a two-RBI triple from Simpson, to increase their lead to 14-1.
Shannon Mortimer made her first appearance of the year in the sixth inning and struck one batter out and forced two groundouts to end the game.
Game Two – Iowa State 10, Howard 2
Iowa State capped its 2-0 day with a run-rule victory over Howard, 10-2, in six innings.
Kaylee Pond tripled twice as part of a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Ramos homered for the second consecutive game and brought in three runs. Simpson (1-of-3, HR), Alesia Ranches (2-of-3, 2 2B) and Sarah Tyree (2-of-2, 1 2B) also posted multi-RBI games.
Swain (3-0) struck out seven in a winning effort in the circle. She allowed only one earned run in 4.0 innings of work.
Howard struck first in the opening frame with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, but Iowa State would even the score with a Pond triple followed by a sac-fly from Ranches in the top of the second.
Ramos gave the Cyclones their first lead in the third inning with her second home run of the day, a solo shot to make the score, 2-1. A four-run fourth inning, highlighted by Simpson's two-run homer, broke the game open and increased the Cyclones' lead to 6-1.
The Cyclones led 8-1 after back-to-back doubles from Ranches and Tyree in the fifth, but Howard would get a run back in the bottom of the inning. Iowa State gained an eight-run margin with two runs in the sixth to run-rule the Bison.
