WASHINGTON D.C. – Iowa State (8-1, 0-0 Big 12) closed out its trip to Washington D.C. with a pair of decisive wins over Howard (3-5, 0-0 MEAC) and Coppin State (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) Monday. The Cyclones downed Howard, 10-1, before handling Coppin State in five innings, 10-2.
Mikayla Ramos highlighted the day at the plate for the Cyclones with three home runs and six RBIs. Ramos now has six home runs on the year and five home runs in the last four games.
Freshman Angelina Allen turned heads on the final day of the trip, combining to go 6-of-7 with a double, triple and four RBIs.
Ellie Spelhaug (2-1) and Shannon Mortimer (1-0) each earned decisions in the circle for Iowa State.
Game One – Iowa State 10, Howard 1
The long ball once again fueled Iowa State to a double digit run output as three Cyclones homered in a 10-1 victory over Howard.
Ramos, Alesia Ranches and Kasey Simpson all hit home runs in the contest. Allen doubled and tripled as part of a four-hit, three-RBI performance.
Ellie Spelhaug picked up her second win of the year in the circle after allowing only four hits and one earned run in 5.0 innings. Karlie Charles entered in relief in the sixth inning and struck out four.
The Cyclones struck first in the opening frame when Allen singled to left field, scoring Carli Spelhaug from third base to give ISU a 1-0 advantage. Ramos' third home run in as many games doubled Iowa State's lead in the third inning.
Ranches hit a long ball of her own in the fourth inning, a two-run shot, to extend the Cyclone lead to 4-0. Howard would cross one run in the bottom of the frame to pull back within three at 4-1.
Allen broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning to score a pair for the Cyclones. In the seventh, Ranches came through with an RBI single and Simpson homered for the second consecutive game to push ISU's lead to 10-1.
Game Two – Iowa State 10, Coppin State 2
Iowa State posted its fifth game of the season scoring 10 or more runs in a 10-2 victory over Coppin State in five innings.
Ramos was stellar once again with a pair of home runs in a 3-for-3 outing with 5 RBIs, tied for her career high. Allen recorded another multi-hit game and drove in a run while nine-hole hitter Kali Gose provided a spark to the bottom of the lineup with a 2-for-3, one-RBI day.
Janessa Jasso earned the starting nod in the circle but was lifted in the first inning for Shannon Mortimer. Mortimer (1-0) tossed a solid 4.1 innings in which she allowed only two earned runs on three hits.
Ramos' fifth home run of the season and fourth long ball in the last four games got Iowa State on the board in the bottom of the first. Coppin State would answer, however, with two runs in the top of the second to retake the lead, 2-1.
The Cyclones batted around the order and strung together six consecutive hits to cross six runs in the second inning. A Ramos sac-fly would tack on yet another run for ISU in the third inning, bringing the score to 8-2.
Ramos' standout weekend with yet another home run, a solo shot, in the bottom of the fifth. The next at-bat, Allen singled and was pinch ran for by Lea Nelson. Nelson stole second base and advanced home on a throwing error by the Eagles catcher to give the Cyclones the eight-run margin needed for a run-rule victory.
