CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Iowa State (9-2, 0-0 Big 12) split on day one at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, falling in a pitcher's battle to No. 6 UCLA (9-3, 0-0 PAC-12), 3-0, before defeating CSUN (7-6, 0-0 Big West) in the night cap, 8-3.
Game One – Iowa State 0, No. 6 UCLA 3
Iowa State dropped a tightly contested game to No. 6 UCLA in the Cyclones' Mary Nutter debut. Both sides had just one hit apiece after five innings, but the Bruins managed to plate three runs in the sixth to claim a 3-0 victory.
Ellie Spelhaug (2-2) was brilliant for five innings, striking out six batters to tie her career high. Spelhaug ran into some trouble in the sixth and was lifted for Saya Swain with the bases loaded and one out.
Swain forced the first batter she saw into a foul pop-up, but then gave up a pair of bases-loaded walks. Charles entered in relief of Swain and recorded the final out, but not before the Bruins tacked on a third run to take a 3-0 advantage into the final frame.
Iowa State had multiple scoring opportunities in the game but couldn't make the most of them as three Cyclones were left stranded in scoring position. Carli Spelhaug opened the game with a leadoff single and eventually worked her way to third base, but that was the only hit ISU could muster in the contest.
Game Two – Iowa State 8, CSUN 3
Iowa State bounced back from its tournament-opening defeat with an 8-3 win over CSUN.
Milaysia Ochoa (3-of-4, 2B, 3B) finished with two extra-base hits and two RBIs in an outstanding performance at the plate. Freshman Angelita Fuentes, in just her third appearance as a Cyclone, went 2-of-2 with a double and an RBI. Mikayla Ramos homered for the fifth time in the last six games.
Charles was given the starting nod in the circle and recorded her first six outs via strikeout en route to a 4.1 inning performance in which she allowed two earned runs. Swain (4-0) entered in relief of Charles in the fifth and struck out three in 2.2 innings to earn the decision in the circle.
Iowa State got on the board first in the third inning after a Ramos sac-fly and a CSUN error crossed a pair of runs. The Matadors strung together three hits in the fifth inning to tie the game, 2-2.
Ramos' seventh home run of the year, a solo shot to left field, separated the two sides in the sixth frame and sparked an offensive outburst for the Cyclones. Iowa State increased its lead to 8-2 with two additional runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
