CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Iowa State (10-2, 0-0 Big 12) earned its fifth run-rule victory of the season Saturday afternoon over San Diego (7-9, 0-0 WCC) in game three of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Cyclones' 17-run output was the most in a game since 2012 against Brown.
Mikayla Ramos had another remarkable performance at the plate, finishing with four RBIs, four runs and a double shy of the cycle. Angelina Allen (3-of-3, 3 RBI) and Carli Spelhaug (2-of-3, RBI) also posted multi-hit games. In total, eight different Cyclones logged an RBI in the win.
Ellie Spelhaug (3-2) earned the win after entering in relief of Saya Swain in the first inning. Ellie finished with four strikeouts and allowed three runs, all of which came in the final inning.
Iowa State wasted no time stepping in front of San Diego with two runs in the top of the first inning. Carli Spelhaug reached on a leadoff single before Ramos stepped into the batter's box and hit her nation-leading eighth home run of the season.
The Cyclone lead was short lived as the Toreros crossed two runs in the bottom of the first to even the score. Ranches' fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, put ISU back in front in the first at-bat of the second inning.
In the same inning, a two-RBI single up the middle from Allen increased Iowa State's lead to 6-2. ISU tacked on another when Ramos raced home from second base on a hard-hit ball from Milaysia Ochoa that found a way down the third-base line.
Iowa State added three more runs in the fourth inning on an Ochoa RBI double followed by a San Diego throwing error. Kaylee Pond then put the ball in play to bring Ochoa, who advanced to third on the error, home.
The Cyclones exploded for eight runs on six hits in the fifth to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Ramos and RBI singles from Carli Spelhaug and Allen. Abby Gunter recorded her first hit of the season, a two-RBI double to make the score, 17-2.
San Diego would add three runs in the fifth, but the rally was too little, too late as the Cyclones won in five innings, 17-5.
