CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Â The Iowa State softball team dropped a pair of games against the Omaha Mavericks and the Drake Bulldogs to begin the 2023 season at the UNI Doc Halverson Tournament on Friday.
Iowa State (0-2) scored their first run of the day after Mikayla Ramos collected her first RBI of the 2023 season on a sacrifice fly against Omaha (2-0). Ramos is now one RBI shy of tying Alex Johnson for third all-time (134) at Iowa State in career RBIs.
After the first frame, Iowa State collected just four hits while leaving eight runners on base against the Mavericks.Â
Against Drake (1-0), starting pitcher Karlie Charles posted four shutout innings before being replaced. Offensively, Iowa State recorded its first hit of the game in the fourth inning after an Alesia Ranches single.
In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs scored a pair of runs to go up 2-0 on the Cyclones. In the bottom of the frame, Milaysia Ochoa led off the inning with a single and later advanced on a wild pitch to give the Cyclones its first runner in scoring position. Following the wild pitch, two ISU batters lined out to end the inning.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Drake added three runs to its lead before three outs were made. Iowa State began the seventh inning with a leadoff double by Lea Nelson. The Cyclones scored its first run of the game after an RBI single by Malaysia Ochoa in the final frame. Unfortunately, a strike out and pop out ended the rally for ISU.

How It Happened (Game 1 vs. Omaha)
Carli Spelhaug led off the first inning with a walk.
Spelhaug advanced to third during Angelina Allen's at-bat.
With one out and a runner on third, Mikayla Ramos delivered a sacrifice fly for the Cyclones that drove in Spelhaug to give ISU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Saya Swain stepped into the circle first for ISU.
After a leadoff walk, followed by a single and an error, Swain only surrendered one run in the first frame.
In the second inning, the Cyclones found a way to load the bases with two outs but came up empty.
Swain bounced back with a 1-2-3 inning for ISU in the second inning.
Swain forced a popout, groundout and a strikeout to hold the Mavs at one.Â
Omaha took a 3-1 lead in the third inning after a two-run homerun.
Despite back-to-back singles to begin the fourth inning, Iowa State couldn't capitalize.
Iowa State kept the Mavs scoreless in the fourth inning.
Swain recorded a groundout, popout and a strikeout in back-to-back innings.
After two outs, Mikayla Ramos reached base on a single.
ISU was held scoreless in the fifth.
Ellie Spelhaug replaced Swain after one batter in the fifth inning.
The batter reached via error.
The Mavs scored two runs off one hit and an error in the fifth.
Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth inning.
The seventh inning began with a Sarah Tyree walk for the Cyclones but the Cyclones failed to plate any runs in the final frame.
How It Happened (Game 2 vs. Drake)
Karli Charles held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first four innings before being replaced by Ellie Spelhaug.
Charles' final line was 4.2 IP, seven hits and two strikeouts.
Alesia Ranches recorded the first Cyclone hit of the game with a single in the fourth inning.
Drake plated two runs in the fifth inning.Â
Malaysia Ochoa singled to lead off the fifth inning for the Cyclones.
Ochoa later advanced to second base on a wild pitch.
ISU recorded a fly out, line out and another fly out to end the fifth inning.
Despite a leadoff walk and a single to begin the inning for Drake, Ellie Spelhaug shut the door on any potential runs for the Bulldogs in the sixth inning.
The Cyclones went 1-2-3 in the sixth.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the seventh inning to extend its lead to 5-0.
Karli Charles re-entered to pitch the seventh inning for the Cyclones
Charles kept the Bulldogs scoreless in the seventh inning.
Iowa State scored their first run of the game in the seventh inning.
Lea Nelson led off the inning with a double.
Malaysia Ochoa came through with a single to center field to score Nelson.
The rally fell short for Iowa State after a pop up ended the game.

The Cyclones will play Drake and UNI tomorrow afternoon on day two of the UNI Doc Halverson Tournament. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. against the Bulldogs while first pitch against the Panthers is slated for 5:30 p.m.
