AMES, Iowa – No. 3 Iowa State (13-1, 3-0 Big 12) won its 10th-straight in an 82-59 triumph over Utah (8-6, 0-3 Big 12) Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Curtis Jones, arguably the best sixth-man in the country, dominated the night. Jones buried 10-of-17 shots, including 3-of-7 from long range, and dished out a game-high six assists for his fifth 20-point outing (23 points) of the year.
ISU used a 21-3 run to end the first half to notch its 27th-straight win in Hilton Coliseum, the second-longest homecourt winning streak in school history.
Three other Cyclones joined Jones in double-figure scoring with Tamin Lipsey tallying 20, Joshua Jefferson with 17 and Keshon Gilbert with 15. Jefferson also grabbed seven boards.
Lipsey, Gilbert and Jones each had two steals to help the Cyclones force 20 Utah turnovers, the third time this year an ISU opponent posted 20+ miscues. ISU outrebounded its ninth-straight opponent (39-38) thanks to a 22-17 advantage in the second half.
Gabe Madsen led the Utes with 20 points.
How it Happened
Jones' spark from the bench helped the Cyclones jump out to an early 15-7 lead with Jones scoring seven quick points when he entered the game.
The Utes answered with a 15-2 run to take a 22-17 lead with under 10 minutes remaining. Gabe Madsen hit a pair of treys and scored eight points in the run.
It was wake-up call for the Cyclones, who turned up the defensive pressure, scoring 12-straight points and holding Utah scoreless in a five-minute period with four turnovers. Gilbert got it started with a deep 3-pointer and Jones added five points, and suddenly ISU held a 29-22 advantage.
By the time the first half ended, the Cyclones led 38-25, holding the Utes to just one field goal in the final nine minutes and outscoring the visitors 21-3 during that stretch. Jones had 14 first-half points to pace ISU.
ISU's sluggish start at the beginning of the second half allowed Utah to creep back into the game. ISU opened the second period making just 2-of-12 shots, as Utah trimmed the lead to 44-38 with 13 minutes remaining.
A steal by Lipsey which resulted in an intentional foul helped reignite ISU. Lipsey made both free-throws to start a 9-0 Cyclone run and increase their lead to 56-41 with 11 minutes remaining.
Jones then scored six-straight points and Lipsey hit a 3-pointer, and the Cyclones held a commanding 66-47 lead with six minutes left and never looked back.
Key Performer
Tamin Lipsey scored 20 points, grabbed seven boards and had two steals in the Cyclone victory. Lipsey was 11-of-14 at the free-throw line and reached the 200-steal plateau in his career with his two thefts. He now ranks fifth in career steals at ISU with 201. Â
