AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-2, 3-1 Big 12) won in four sets against UCF (10-5, 1-3 Big 12) Saturday afternoon to end the week at 2-0. Set scores on the day were 25-27, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20.
After losing the first, Iowa State responded in the second to tie it back up, while the set saw brilliant serving by Tierney Jackson who dialed in a new career-high five aces, all served up in the second. Iowa State did not allow another UCF set win to seal its third Big 12 victory. ISU totaled 10 aces on the day, making for the 25th match under Christy Johnson-Lynch to serve 10 or more.
Alea Goolsby kept her double-figure kill streak going strong with her eighth in a row, while totaling her 11th match this season with 10-plus. Goolsby had a match-leading 16 kills, while Pam McCune (10) and Nayeli Ti'a (12) were also in double figures. McCune totaled her 10 at .318 hitting, while putting up three blocks.
Libero Rachel Van Gorp joined Goolsby in extending a streak, having her 20th-straight 10-plus dig match with a match-leading 16.
SET ONE
With the visitors leading 10-6, the Cyclones came back to tie it leading to a Knight timeout. Iowa State flipped the lead at 13-12, while Goolsby put down her fifth kill at 17-15. UCF took a late lead at 20-19, and the Cyclones took the advantage back at 22-21 on Goolsby's sixth kill. Goolsby's seventh kill brought it to set point (24-23), but UCF answered getting its own set point opportunity at 25-24. The set continued, with UCF winning it 27-25.
SET TWO
Back-to-back aces by Jackson knotted the scoreboard at 6s, and numerous ties followed. Iowa State took a run of three featuring a block put up by Jackson and McCune and Goolsby's 10th kill to lead to the scoreboard reading 15-12, ISU. The Cyclones kept it rolling taking 10 straight points behind the serving of Jackson, who totaled her fifth ace to make it 22-12. ISU kept control, taking the set 25-15.
SET THREE
Freshman Reagan Hanfelt put down an ace to make it 6-2, prompting a timeout by the visitors. The Cyclones remained up, winning the race to 15 (15-8). Iowa State's 10th block, put up by Ti'a and Hanfelt, brought things to 20-12, while UCF battled back to make it 21-18 to cause a Cyclone timeout. UCF then came within one at 23-22 as ISU called its final timeout, and the Cyclones followed to win the set 25-23.
SET FOUR
Maya Duckworth went back-to-back at the service line to give ISU an early 5-4 lead, while the frame remained close. McCune would deliver three-straight crucial kills to make it 12-11, giving Iowa State the lead back. Iowa State reached 20 (20-17) after UCF's 15th service error. UCF would win a challenge, reversing the score from 25-18 to 24-19 to keep the match going, but ISU pressed on to win the match with a set score of 25-20.
