AMES, Iowa – No. 4 Iowa State (12-0) raced out to a 45-9 lead and never looked back in a 91-60 victory over Long Beach State (3-10) Sunday evening in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones connected 55 percent from the field (36-of-65) and 52 percent from downtown (11-of-21) to tie for the second-best start without a loss in school history at 12-0.
Milan Momcilovic made his first six shots from downtown, tallied his sixth 20-point game (27) of the season, and was 9-of-11 from the field to pace the Cyclones. It was Momcilovic's fifth game with five or more treys (7-of-9 3FG) this year and is now 19-of-27 from 3-point range in his last four home games. His seven 3-pointers, his third with seven or more this season, tie for the 11th-best single-game effort in school history.
Joshua Jefferson added 19 points (8-of-13 FG), 10 boards and five assists, and Blake Buchanan registered his first double-double as a Cyclone with 13 points and 13 caroms, including five offensive boards. It was Jefferson's fifth double-double of the year.
How it Happened
Iowa State led 18-6 before mounting a massive 17-2 run in a four-minute span to go up 35-8 with 8:02 remaining in the first period. Buchanan started the run with a putback followed by a pair of Momcilovic 3-pointers to take the sand out of the Beach.
Momcilovic kept it on automatic, drilling two more 3-pointers as the Cyclone lead ballooned to 45-9 with a little over five minutes remaining until the break.
Momcilovic had 16 points (5-5 FG, 4-4 3FG) and Jefferson had 15 points (6-7 FG) to aid the Cyclones to 68.8 percent shooting and a 57-20 lead in the first half.
Momcilovic opened the second half with two more treys to pad the Cyclone lead to 67-24 at the first media timeout. ISU still led by 43 points (71-28), the largest deficit of the game, with 13 minutes left before mixing up the lineups.
Key Performer
Killyan Toure certainly hasn't played like a freshman so far in his young career, and tonight was another outstanding performance from the rookie. Toure tallied seven points and three boards, but he continued to show his brilliance as a facilitator in the Cyclone offense by dishing out a career-high six assists.
