FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Two school records came down to close indoor regular season at the Arkansas Qualifier and Iowa Open, highlighted by the women's distance medley relay setting the sixth-fastest all-time collegiate performance.
The women's distance medley relay crushed the school record with 10:44.11 to finish third in the elite field behind Oklahoma State and Arkansas. The time currently ranks fourth in the nation and sixth in collegiate history.
Makayla Clark led off with the fastest 1,200m split of 3:19.51 and handed off to Rachel Joseph for the 400m. Joseph was one of two to post a sub-51 second split with 50.63, and handed the baton to Emma Vorpagel for the 800m leg. Vorpagel clocked 2:08.38 and Betty Kipkore anchored with the 1,200m, clocking 4:25.60. The squad cut 10 seconds off the school record set earlier this season.
With more teams set to run on the busy DMR weekend, the squad sits in good position to qualify for NCAA Championships as the top 12 advance following conference championships. The Iowa State women look to qualify for the first time in the NCAA era after taking the DMR national title in 1981 while women competed under the AIAW.
The men's squad of Emanuel Galdino, Gus Langford, Jailan Sohna and Robin Kwemoi Bera went 9:26.13 for third place. The time ranks fourth in Iowa State history. Galdino led with a 1,200m split of 2:51.03 and handed off to Langford who sprinted a 47.10 400m. Freshman Sohna then went 1:47.95 in the 800m and Bera anchored the 1,600m in 4:00.07.
Jenna James now ranks second in 400m Iowa State history behind Joseph as the Cyclone newcomer hit an all-time best of 52.71. James finished fifth overall and as the second-fastest collegian.
At the Iowa Open, Daylin Williams broke the 60m hurdles school record for the third time with 7.72 to take second in the final. The time is a season best while his PR of 7.65 was set prior to being a Cyclone. In prelims, Alec Carr took second with an all-time best of 7.77 to move from No. 5 to No. 3 in Cyclone history.
Emma Havighurst kicked off running events at the Iowa Open clocking the fastest 60m hurdles prelims time with a PR of 8.31. Havighurst moved up to sixth in Iowa State history as the freshman trimmed .14 seconds off her previous best.
Weight thrower Lucas Morrison moved on to the final out of flight one, going on to hit a PR of 65-10 1/4 (20.07m) in the fifth round. Morrison hit 20 meters for the first time and moves up a spot to eighth in Iowa State history. Morrison took sixth, while Daniel Norris also moved onto the final and finished ninth with a season-best 63-9 (19.43m).
Big 12 Indoor Championships are next, Feb. 27-28.
