SALT LAKE CITY – No. 4 Iowa State (24-4, 11-4 Big 12) salvaged its mountain trip Tuesday evening, defeating Utah (10-18, 2-13 Big 12) convincingly by a score of 75-59.
The two teams would exchange leads three times in the first six minutes of action, but from there on, ISU coasted to its fifth road win of the season. As part of its fifth road win, Cyclone wing Milan Momcilovic etched his name in the record book as he set the new single-season 3-point record by surpassing Dedric Willoughby's 102 set in 1997.
Iowa State's offense dominated the paint Tuesday night, thanks in large part to a monster performance from Joshua Jefferson. Jefferson seemingly got whatever he wanted, scoring 21 points for his seventh 20-plus point performance of the year. Jefferson would also finish with a team-high six rebounds. Momcilovic (14), Jamarion Batemon (13) and Blake Buchanan (10) also finished in double figures. Five Cyclones had two steals on the day.
Utah's starting backcourt of Terrence Brown and Don McHenry led the Ute offense. Brown finished with 18 points, while McHenry had 14, as the two combined to go 11-18 from the field. Keanu Dawes finished with a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double to round out the top performers.
Despite the teams shooting similarly from the field, ISU won with its defensive pressure by forcing 18 turnovers. The Cyclones would turn those 18 turnovers into 20 points. Iowa State also had its bench unit outproduce Utah (26-8) while the bigs went to work in the paint by outscoring the Utes (38-26).
How it Happened
Utah couldn't have asked for a better start, forcing an ISU missed layup before converting an and-one triple on the other end for an early 4-0 lead. After forcing three ties, going back and forth, ISU took its first lead at the 14:31 mark thanks to a Killyan Toure layup.
Utah would retake the lead, 12-10, with 13:44 to go in the first half thanks to an Obomate Abbey layup. From there, though, it was all Iowa State. ISU would grab the lead with 13:16 to go and never look back, holding the advantage for the rest of the way.
ISU established a ten-point lead with 10 minutes to go in the stanza and would ride that edge into the break, leading 41-31.
In the second half, the Utes attacked the Cyclones and were able to trim the deficit in half to trail by five with 16:51 to go. ISU saw its 45-40 lead expand to 62-49 as it held Utah without a field goal for over about nine minutes of game time.
That stout defensive stretch was all ISU needed to put things to bed as it coasted to a 16-point win to move to 24-4 for the third time ever.
Key Performer
Joshua Jefferson had complete control of Tuesday's contest, as whenever he decided he wanted to score, he could. Jefferson finished with just his second 20-plus point performance of conference play, with both coming on the road.
